So my FFL knows my weakness for all things S&W. I went over to finalize paperwork on a nice 5904 when I spy a blue snub on his table he uses for auction site photos. It’s a 10-5 square butt pinned snub that someone gold painted the various stamps. Bluing is almost perfect and stocks are sharp but the most interesting part is the ground off hammer spur.

Whoever did the work did a great job. It still has the single action notch as I can cock it. The trigger is incredibly smooth. Cylinder face has the faintest trace of burn marks. He offered $500 out the door so decided why not. Maybe a little high but on point for this area. Serial number puts it 1966-1967.

Just curious back in the 60s did the factory offer any service to bob a hammer?

Also while nice I prefer to remove the gold lettering. What would be a safe way to do so without ruining the bluing?

Very nice grab. I do not believe the factory offered that service but it was a fairly common modification for snag free carry in the pocket with the availability to cock the action for a single action shot. Sometimes the top of the hammer was grooved for better purchase as well. It should be pretty easy to find an original hammer should you decide to put it back in at a later date.

Very nice. I found an unfired 1968 vintage in a box about 6 years ago. Great trigger on it. Round Butt version, but my hammer is in tact. Very nice guns!

Great find

I agree with Marshal Tom. FWIW, all the hammer bobbing I recall having seen was done by the owner, a friend of the owner, or a gunsmith.

Since the OP's pistol has a SA/DA trigger, I would think the bobbed hammer probably isn't factory.

S&W did produce the Model 60 and 64 in DAO with a bobbed hammer in the 1980's.
