WHICH HOME DEFENSE SHOTGUN?

I had been using an 870 Tac 14 for HD until recently, when I picked up a Tac 13. Recoil is very pleasant, especially with #7.5 trap loads.

I still use the Mossberg that I bought when I was 12 with paper route money. Thousands of rounds. Use it for deer still, 3" #1 buck. The ultimate home defense set up is, a chihuahua, a cur dog and a Mossberg.

If you have an 870 and a 500, sounds like a great excuse for a range trip with your friend. Let him try both and see which he does better with. If that isn't possible, seeing as you prefer the 870, you could probably help him more with that choice.

If none of those suffices, just explain the differences (i.e. safety location, feed gate, etc...) recommend a few videos on each and let him make the choice that way.

I personally use a Mossberg 500 all purpose field for everything from duck hunting to personal defense, but grew up a fan of Remington. Either way, I am sure he will do just fine!

I own both but prefer the Mossberg because of the tang safety. I'm a lefty and have used Mossbergs for years for that reason. I have one set up for home defense right now. I also have two other tang-safety home defense favorites: a Browning BPS and a Savage Model 67.

Remington 870P (Police). That's what I have within arm reach.

I like Riot Guns and I own several (Remington 870P's, Remington 11-87P, Winchester M-12, Mossberg 500 & 590, Benelli M4, and a FN SLP) but the 870P is the one I'm most comfortable with. Built on a separate assembly line for LE, it's a shotgun that just works every time.

I, too, like the Mossberg 500 for the "tang" safety (there really is no tang) but with one caveat.

The safety button is plastic and often breaks. Metal replacements are inexpensive and easy to install, and I strongly recommend doing so before putting the gun into service.

A easy inexpensive fix for that is Havlinsales sells a metal safety that's the same size etc as the plastic one for like ten bucks. Go to a hardware store and buy a allen head cap screw the same length and thread pitch as the silly factory one way screw. The new screw head provides a nice bump to get a good purchase on the safety switch with your thumb.....FWIW

I was an 870 man for 50 years and had 12 and 20 gauge models but tried a Mossberg Maverick for something different and really liked it. I like the slide release, light weight, open loading port, and crossbolt safety on front of the trigger guard. I'm 5-9 and the stock was too long but I cut it down and it was perfect. The older Wingmaster 870s are much prettier guns and I remember how they used to be everywhere at gunshows for 100 bucks. For home defense I like a 20 gauge since it's lighter and handier and I can shoot it one handed when opening a door. The extended magazine and maybe a butt cuff ammo carrier would be the only accessories I would need or want.

What I have, use, or like will not answer your friends needs. Good luck.
My home defense is taken seriously, so money doesn't count.
I try to use a pellet rifle, but have adequate backup.

With all that said, you are asking a crowd that should be able to give you all the advice you need. Be safe.

Last time I was asked to buy a shotgun for a personal friend, we talked a little while. I ordered him his parkerized 870 and he smiled. I checked "other".

I voted other. I will use this 103 year old Winchester model 12.

I voted other because I use an old m1912 built in 1917 with a short no choke barrel . That said I would not hesitate a second to trust either of the guns mentioned and would go with whichever I got the best deal on. Got a friend that's been using the same old Springfield that he has owned for 60 some odd years , works slick as glass and always goes bang , and they are usually very cheap. Hard to go wrong if it's US made and preferably older.
