How much ammo do you bring when traveling?

Kind of hard to discreetly bring a long gun into a hotel room.

I use the typical hard- or soft case for that and carry it into the hotel like everything else. I don't try to be discreet; I carry it in plain sight. If the hotel has an issue with it, they can come talk to me, but I damn sure won't leave it in the vehicle, in an unsecured parking lot, overnight. I can take my money somewhere else if it bothers them. So far, I've never had an issue.

Granted, haven't done that in D.C. or NY yet, but I would w/o hesitation.

When I am out and about ,and or traveling, I keep my things organized, simple, and light. The revolver is loaded and one spare strip is filled. Access is super easy and super fast.

Retired, living in rural midwest. We rarely travel by air, and when we do it's generally Europe, so I just leave everything at home except my "get home gear", which stays in the car, always.

We do a fair amount of traveling by car/truck around the state and midwest, and we always have that emergency gear onboard, which includes a Ruger PC9 9mm carbine with the Glock mag adapter, and 3 30-round mags and 1 17-round. The gun is topped with a Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x30 with the illuminated dot reticle and a simple carry strap. Additionally, there is a SigSauer P365 w/ 1 12-round mag and 2 10-round. All mags are loaded with 124gr JHP, and another 50 round box is in the bag.

I answered this a year ago. At this point, if just traveling for a weekend visit, I would have my usual Two carry guns and plenty of extra ammo. For my Four Months in Florida during the Winter, I add Three more guns and approximately 1000 rounds for the Range. I never fly.

Usually carry my Colt LW Commander with 2 spare mags. Depending on where Im going the DW Razorback with 10 mags or my banjo case with a shorty AR and 5-6 30 rnd. mags with 28 rnds in each. Have all the emergency get home stuff stored in Highlander.

All depends on where I am going. EDC changes somewhat but is usually one of a couple of striker fired medium to hi capacity .9mm auto's with a spare mag. sometimes just going to the store it's a J frame with a spare reload. When we go on the road, I usually take at least a J frame and one or more of my larger capacity semi auto's with spare mags. When camping, I often take a shotgun or an AR-15 as well. I am in the process of building a short .9mm carbine that takes Glock Mags as a HD, car gun for road trips. All things change depending on need, purpose and duration.

I see this thread made the rounds about this time last year. I didn't read it then but it has gained a little new life in the last couple days and I'm caught up. I'm with Sgt. Buzzard. How many gunfights could I possibly encounter in one motorcycle trip anyway?

Leaving next month on a long motorcycle tour through the south. I'll have a loaded 442 and one speed strip.

98% of you think I'll be under armed. I'll feel quite comfortable.

The old timers said the way to correctly gauge the correct charge for a muzzle loader was put ball on sheet of paper and pour powder on top of ball until covered.
I also heard the way to figure out how much ammo you need is to pour into your tin foil hat until full. Once gauged you can put in speed loaders, ammo wallets, bandoliers, and pockets.

I bring the same weather driving, flying, or just going to Walmart. Since I always wear a shoulder rig, in addition to what’s in the gun, I either have two speed loaders or two speed strips for my revolvers, or two mags for my autos.

Most of my flying is on company business, so I've never taken any firearms along for the ride.

When I travel to CT to visit the kids/grandkids, its my EDC (640-1Pro) with 2 extra speed strips and 2 full boxes of ammo as I usually try to get to the range during these visits.

I also typically bring a second handgun - either my Kimber Ultra Carry or 66-4 - with 2 more boxes of ammo.

My only "difficulty" is that I have to stop of the PA side of the PA/NY border to "unstrap" and lock everything away for the 80mile trip across NY into CT as NY State does not recognize my OH permit. I also have a non-resident CT permit so I can then take a deep breath again once I cross the NY/CT state line.

Ammo in the case with the gun…

…with that inside the suitcase. In original box in which ammo was purchased.

Both the gun/ammo case and the suitcase are hard sided and locked. With TSA, locks to be specific.

Be safe.

So when you fly you have a suitcase and a gun case inside the suitcase, correct?

So do you keep the ammo in the case with the gun or in your suitcase?

When I travel with my EDC my load out is the same as it is whenever I leave my home to go about my everyday business.

Pistol, holster, spare magazine.

Is your Ohio permit valid in Pa. now? It did not use to be. I had to laugh as I visit a friend in Pa. once a year. My Fla. permit is good from Fla to Pa driving. I could carry in Pa or Ohio (he lives 10 miles from the border). He could not carry in Ohio, as the two states did not have reciprocity at the time.
