Pete Rose

I'd guess since the lifetime ban has ended he'll be inducted straightaway.
Rightly so.

My thoughts as well. He was banned for life, but now that he has passed, the ban should be lifted.

Putting aside his transgressions, there is no denying that he was still one of the greatest of all time players of the game.

MLB legend Pete Rose'''s cause of death revealed | Fox News

Nevada officials on Tuesday determined MLB legend Pete Rose's cause of death.

"His cause of death was determined as Hypertensive and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease with a significant condition of Diabetes Mellitus," the Clark County Coroner's Office said. "The manner of death was natural."

He was a great player....

...kind of full of himself, but I suppose if you are great, you're great. I don't see any problem with betting on your own team. They thought they found enough negatives to ban him but it sure wasn't a clear cut case.

Peter should have gotten in but as someone said yesterday that know him well had he shown a reasonable amount of contriteness it may have changed his ban. We all know there are a few in the hall that were less than sterling characters.

I'm conflicted about Rose. Surely not alone in that emotion. With with most great artists and athletes, I feel one can admire and respect the skill while ignoring whatever they are up to when not performing. (Hmm. Maybe that's the difference, though, from other greats. Yes, I think so. He bet on the game while he was coaching the game.)

I've read a number of his obituaries. Here's one I thought worth sharing:

Column | Remember this about Pete Rose: Everything
A baseball savant, a gambling addict, a corrupted individual — Rose contained multitudes. But no one loved the game — or damaged it — as much as Charlie Hustle.

This.
I'll be the outlier. Never liked Pete Rose. He was an a******. But then again many highly talented athletes were a******s. The hall of fame should be about recognizing great achievements ON THE FIELD and by that measure he should be in. Pete's problem is that he could never find it in himself to be contrite, apologize and ask for forgiveness until it was much too late. Thumb your nose at da man and he will bend you over the lick log and put the wood to you. Pete never realized that-but then again that kind of character flaw probably had a lot do do with his on field achievements.
Liked the cause of death-has the hi blood, the suga blood and probably had a liver that had been around the block. Would expect nothing less from him. Probably the way I will go out.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, Caje, but I think he violated it:

He bet on games he was coaching.

Maybe so, but I think MLB must shoulder much is not all of the blame for that. If they hadn't allowed Marge Schott to so grossly under pay him for managing, he wouldn't have needed the money. :p

I have never been a fan of Pete Rose, but I acknowledge he is the hit king with 4256 hits.

He said he was only betting on his own team, I doubt that.
I am not a gambler, so not very aware of how it works, but Muss points out above that people can bet on the point spread. So say he only bet on his own team to win, he still could have manipulated the team's play to affect the number of runs by which they won...

As for needing money, I don't doubt it. I think I read that when he went as a player to Philly he received a record setting contract, but people addicted to gambling can blow through any amount of cash like a wildfire through a dry forest in a windstorm.

After all, Rose wound up autographing baseballs for a (apparently negotiable) few bux for passers by in a booth in Vegas.

For those addicted to it, gambling is a kind of mental illness, I think.

Helluva ballplayer though. No question.

I'm not the least bit conflicted. He was a great player, but he deserved what he got.

I'd like to see the same stick used with today's athletes.

I have very mixed feelings about Pete Rose and the Hall of Fame. On one hand, the only rule of baseball prominently displayed on a large sign in every clubhouse, at least during Rose's tenure as a player and manager, is the following:

Rose admitted he bet on baseball, and further admitted that he bet on the Reds. I believe he further admitted betting on baseball from the clubhouse phone, in the days before cell phones. We have nothing if we don't adhere to the rules that were in place, and of which every player and manager was regularly notified . . .

On the other hand, when I call up MLB.com, I notice that the 2024 ALL MLB TEAM is sponsored by MGM Rewards . . .

The Commissioner's office also has a meeting, or did at the time, with every club explaining the no betting on baseball rule, what to do if approached by a third party and to avoid associations with gambling houses. Henry Aaron and Willie Mays were both banned from baseball when they were paid big money to invite folks to Atlantic City gambling places.

Should Rose be in the HOF? Sure but after Shoeless Joe Jackson.

All of the greats from that era of Bball were short on cash.

Chris Sabo of the Reds drove a 1981 Ford Escort with about 300,000 miles on it. Heard other players teased him about it parked next to their big $$ cars.

He would come to the ball park next to my subdivision a lot to sign stuff for the kids.

I think he's coaching a ball team in India now days.
