By the time S&W introduced the L-frame, stainless steel was the hottest seller in the non-plastic handgun market. Civilians and law enforcement both appreciated the corrosion resistance and lower maintenance afforded by stainless steel, so blued and nickel plated carbon steel handguns were not produced in the same numbers as stainless.
I, too, appreciate the maintenance side of stainless and the fact that if you remove sharp edges, it does not need some sort of finish touch up or refinishing. I also appreciate a well polished and deeply blued or nickel plated handgun. Properly polished and finished carbon steel better conveys a sense of craftsmanship than a bead blasted or brushed stainless handgun.
Just some of my rambling musings and just like my opinions, they are worth exactly what you paid for them.
