Dog Attack

My general-public opinion? If you were defending your life (or the dog owners life) from the pit bull attack it would be a no-brainer. But shooting an attacking dog to save another animal … that is a slippery slope that depends on your jurisdiction and circumstances. I’d think twice for sure.

Hope all turns out well, and am thinking you did well to use discretion under that pressure.

I won’t hesitate to shoot any dog that attacks mine with the intention of causing serious harm or worse.

My dogs are a part of my family. They're better than most people.

Taking one dog into another dog’s territory is begging for a dogfight. It never ceases to amaze me that most dog owners know almost nothing of the nature of a dog.

I have a couple of friends with big dogs. I won’t go to their house.

In Michigan, you can legally shoot a dog attacking livestock or a human, but not if it's attacking another dog. I have used mace which stopped them in their tracks, but I don't know if pepper spray would have the same effect or not, plus sprays are not as precise and you could spray more than just the attacking dog, such as your dog or the other dog's owner. Maybe a taser?

Same as Florida.

I used a baton style stun gun on a pit years ago. Worked very well. Got him in the behind. He jumped strait up about 5 feet and left a trail of poop behind him.

He ran off about 40 yards and then turned and came straight back at me. I reach under my shirt to grab my gun but thought better not because the owner and his two toddlers were watching behind me.

The sound of my stun gun held him off until the dog catcher arrived.

4 dogs came into the yard 3 yrs ago. attacked and killed 11 of my wife's chickens. I had my 4 inch 15. I killed 2 of them in the yard. shot another leaving the yard..and missed the 4th. Wife was devastated. went down the road coming up to the house and found the 3rd next to the road dead. 2 looked like straight pits the 3rd and 4th had a lot of the look but were mutts. I took a dead chicken and the other 2 dead dogs and laid 'em next to the road Next day they were gone. Never heard a word from the owner. I would have given him a bill for the dead chickens and the 6 rounds of 38s. I don't think he has anymore pits. Think my neighbor shot one attacking his cows with a 7mm mag

In the mountains we get lots of newbies that move in for the cool air and space. They often bring dogs and oddly believe their dogs can roam freely. That leads to negative interactions between city dogs, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, or chickens and ends with a dog often paying their owner's poor judgment.

A while back a Gent who lives East of here told me about dogs attacking and killing his chickens, ducks and turkeys.
He recognized some of the dogs and talked to their owners.
They all expressed doubt that he had accurately IDed their dog, like you must be mistaken! My little Fluffy wouldn’t possible do that!
The next time he heard a disturbance he responded with a flashlight taped onto his 22.
He Took down dogs and buried them in a grove in the rear of his property.
Later he saw fliers, Fluffy Missing, Reward.
He thought Fluffy probably ain’t returning.
Fluffy is sleeping peacefully in the Cedars.

The amazing thing about the dogs that killed the chickens...They started chasing them as they came into the yard..caught, killed 'em and never stopped even when they caught one. They were just in a killing mode...We don't have leash laws etc here...cept maybe in towns...the closest one(town) is almost far enough away. Loose dogs here are truly at risk...Cattle country...Ranchers with rifles

Are you boys familiar with Johnson Grass?
Some of you Southerners probably are. It’s a persistent weed which can invade cultivated fields and literally choke out the crop.
When you chop or cut it at ground level, you are rewarded with new growth.
So the Farmers tried an old solution. Geese. Chinese Geese. They eat the Johnson Grass, but not the Cotton! The fields were surrounded with low fences. Here come the dogs! From miles away.
My Cousin Thomas has probably the first good Rifle that I ever saw.
It was Sears Rifle in 270 win. Made by FN. Basically a lower finish Browning.
Thomas took out a bunch of dogs. I have seen him shot them out around 200 yards.
So how do you know they’re Chinese Geese? They love rice!
No, wait. They have a ‘marble’ on the rear of their beak.

We had a patch of Johnson grass on the farm back east. We had a friend with a bunch of Pygmy goats, We fenced 'em in and that was all she wrote. We had a couple of milk goats that cleaned out 2 hedgerows full of poison Ivy and oak...They loved to rub up against my wife...She kept getting poison ivy...till I explained why...we made up a concoction that dried it right up though

...Then I’d sue the socks off the owner...

Funny thing about that...

When I was bitten by a pit bull mix, I asked my family attorney to explore suing the owner. Turns out that a guy who is so irresponsible that he lets a dangerous dog run loose doesn't have enough money or assets that it's worth suing him...

I came very close to breaking leather and shooting the pit bull. I was successful at getting the pit bull to release by giving him a full power karate chop across the nose. The police were called and I didn’t go to jail for shooting the unleashed attack dog. A very disturbing incident. One of my dogs could just as easily been the victim. I expect the pit bull’s owner to be cited and his dog euthanized. I wonder what the consequences would have been had I shot the pit bull and ended the attack?

I once shot a Rottweiler that had escaped his yard & attacked my neighbor's Rottie. Neighbor's Rottie was a sweet baby in a fullgrown body. The attacking dog, not so much.

No cops were called, as it happened right next door to me. I, however, did call the dead dog's owner & relayed the news. I felt hugely bad as I was a dog owner then myself.

I talked to another not-so-close neighbor & he told me he had almost shot the dog when it was in his yard, being mean to his dogs.

Just a sad situation all the way around, IMO. Not the dog's fault his/her owner didn't socialize the dog.

I doubt the cops would've done anything to you, given the circumstances. Huge difference between a large, muscular aggressive dog & a Beagle, IMO.

Trailing was a Small - small dog. Not sure what, but very small.
