I'd Sure Like To Have THAT S&W Back

Tell us about your favorite S&W that got away and
what circumstances it got away :)

I don't have that regret because I'm a collector not a seller for the most part. A few that I have sold are duplicates or not in the condition that I wanted, but would not sell if I did not have a better replacement.
My regret will be the day that I have to sell, but hopefully it's another decade or so off as I'm enjoying the journey and sharing my journey with you guys and your journeys with me

Blued

When I was a youngster I just thought
Stainless Steel would be better suited
in the North Weather conditions.

I traded off my 1st Revolver S&W blued
Mdl 29 44Rem Mag and S&W blued Mdl
586 357Mag. Got the same in S.S.

I've stuck with S.S. since, but I think
the Blued Revolver would have been
just find, oh well.

My first Smith & Wesson. I carried it as a backup in Vietnam when I was assigned as a FO with the 327th Infantry. Foolishly sold it to my battery XO just before I rotated home.

Bastogne71,

As you may be able to deduce from my screen name, I was an FO with the 187th INF (in Kosovo and Afghanistan).

One of the few new S&Ws I've ever owned was one of the very first Model 16-4 revolvers that came to town. It was a 6" and I got it almost concurrently with a Ruger Blackhawk combo in 32 H&R/32-20 (Buckeye Special). At about the same time I was developing an interest in single shot rifles… you can guess the rest of this sad tale. :(

I traded a model 28 for a Contender 45/410 around 81. I would like to take that trade back. I sold a 4" nickel 19 that was my first real user. I bought some others that moved on fairly quickly. I have no real regrets on most.

I've only ever sold/traded away four S&W revolvers, a 6" 629, 3" 696, 2" 36, and another, which, honestly, I can't even remember.

I don't miss a single one of them, not even the 696. I don't have anything I need to shoot with .44 Special that .38 Special or .357 Magnum won't work, so it wouldn't have been a shooter. I got it for about $850, out-the-door, with a set of Hogue Tulipwood grips on it. I pulled the grips off, put them on a 3" 65, and replaced them with a set of Hogue Monogrips. I then took it to the gun show and traded it for a 4" Model 18 and $150 cash. Personally, I think I came out ahead in that deal and I enjoy the Model 18 a lot more than I would have the 696.

The 629 was really out of time and I made sure the guy who bought it from me knew it wasn't safe to shoot without going to a gunsmith first. The Model 36 was a police trade-in which had been Parkerized at some point and I sold it after I bought a late 50's one with the original, red, box in much better condition.

When I graduated from the Academy I bought a M64 2in to carry as a backup and off duty weapon. However, after a while I discovered that the M64 was a burden to carry in the backup role. I eventually traded the M64 in towards a M49. I always regretted getting rid of the M64 as it was a great shooter and it was my "first" Smith & Wesson. I finally managed to find another M64 (on this forum) this past year and I used it for a snubby revovlver class this past summer, it is also a great shooter.

At one point I bought a M3913 to carry as a backup and another off duty weapon. I sent the gun off to Novak's to have a spurred hammer installed and an action job. That little gun was amazing and I made the mistake of letting a coworker shoot it. I eventually sold the M3913 to that coworker after he wore me down. The sale also probably financed another firearm project that has escaped my memory.

When S&W came out with the M649 my every day carry M49 was traded in towards a new M649. Due to it's SS construction the M649 was superior for being carried in an ankle holster or pocket holster every day. That M649 was with me for almost 21 years. When I retired, I decided that I would have no need for the M649, so I sold it to one of my retired coworkers. I regretted the loss of that M649 for many years. I was finally able to pick up another M649 this past summer and while it is not my original, it is a great shooter. The only way I'll ever let this M649 go, is if my original should ever become available again.

The one that I miss most is the S&W model 28-2 with 4" barrel that my wife bought for me as a present when I graduated from college. I had it brush hard chromed. I carried it daily for a few years and traded it off for a Hi Standard Victor.

28-2 6" that I added the 3 T's, red ramp, white outline rear sight blade. Did action job. Made a lined leather flap holster for it. Started getting a mild flame cut. Sold it at a gun show when I had an FFL. I dreaded selling it.

Too many to list, boohoo. I, like many here, consider myself an accumulator not a collector haha. Through life's ups and downs higher priorities came along so those that didn't get used were passed along.

Now that I'm quickly approaching retirement I'm pretty content with what I have. I enjoyed the ones I let go, not looking back with regrets.

Might check out the gunshow tomorrow so…..:D
