With all the recent threads devoted to the 38/44 Outdoorsman in all its beauty, I thought I'd share a few photos of this April 1952 shipped Outdoorsman that I acquired a few months ago. The collector who owned it before me was notorious for getting S&W to customize his guns to his liking. This one is a 5" O/D with Target Hammer, Target Grips and Target Trigger. It is a beautiful gun in very nice condition (and yes, I do own some guns that are yet to be engraved).:D:);)

I'd love to see some more photos of this wonderful model.

Thanks for letting me share,

With all due respect before we go GaGa over this work of art, will this gun Letter as a 5" from the factory? Despite the previous owners propensity to have the factory succumb to his wishes?

I have not lettered it yet, but I do NOT believe it will letter with the 5" barrel. I think the factory changed out the barrel AFTER it left the factory. My guess it that it will letter as a standard 6.5" barreled Outdoorsman Revolver, and that there will be no records of the barrel swap taking place. Still, I think it is one of the guns that the factory should have offered as a standard offering - that and a 3.5" one. :)

... Whoops!!! I screwed up when I typed the ship date - it actually shipped in April 1952 not 1954... Very sorry for the confusion. I corrected the first post.

Thanks for all the positive responses.

...that gun just has BALANCE.

Besides the barrel being replaced do you figure that the TT, TH and TS were added at the same time? I have a set of stocks that came from a 1950 vintage .44 Special that don't have the left side relief cut...

Original or not, it is just the perfect revolver for an Outdoorsman.

The 5” prewar .38/44 Outdoorsman was named the McGivern Model, as I recall. Another very cool gun.

Well a 5" N frame is pretty much my favorite nowdays ever since I bought my first HD. Love the balance and the overall looks of them.

Is the bbl stamped with the serial number? If you think the bbl was replaced I wonder if they were still re stamping replacement bbls after WWII
