S&W 681

I do not keep up with auction prices, nor am I an expert so take this with a grain of salt:

One casual observation is that it looks like the front sight has been filed down, probably to zero it with a particular agency's standard load. Not a big deal to me, bur may be to some.

It seems to me that the M681 is following the price/demand trajectory of the M58 and the M520. IE, skyrocketing.

Personally, I would want it. Anything under $1,000 may be reasonable, but I do not know the market. I would try to get an idea of what the owner wants for it. If he just said "Make me an offer" I would probably say $700 and hope that was a good start.

I believe the front sight is untouched. They were extremely low from the factory due to the heavy barrel and rib.

ETA- my 681 has the best action out of all my revolvers. She's been modified quite a bit. But I didn't touch the action.

Offer 6, pay 7.

Agency trade in, pachmayers, can't tell if the finish was cleaned up or not (looks like it may have been- edges of cylinder flutes and stop notches don't seem sharp - could just be the picture)

Anywhere from $500 to $1100. It's weird market. I see no signs of refinish on that one, just normal cop wear. Front sight is very short, that's just how they are. $700-ish would be fair, subject to local market pressures. Solid guns, not super common. I think Smith made a bit over 50,000. Kind of a niche market. Most prefer the 686, which I'm sure outsold the 681 by an exponential factor. I have one and like it but my collection focuses on fixed sight revolvers.

Metro PD? -800 I would offer less of course and go from there. One can go up easier than down.

My neighbor retired from DC as did his son. The son is now back, they made him a ridiculous offer to run a street crime division.

Either would love that gun.

I have a NYSP 681 and it's not going anywhere.

A gun shop in my area had an excellent example priced at $799.99. If I didn't already have one, I would have bought it. It only stayed in the case for a few weeks, and I stop there weekly. I'd be a happy camper at $650 - $700 for that one, plus I've had good experiences with the accuracy of the fixed sight guns that I own. (Mods 13, 64, 65, 58, 520, 581, & 681)

What does the op want to do with it?
Im kinda lukewarm to fixed sight guns in general but thats mostly a personal preference. However, I really like my 586.

Let's just say from all the values that have been posted I would almost be steeling this gun. Im more than likely gonna buy it.
With that said I'm not a big fan of fixed sight guns (unless it's a j-frame).
I'll have to see how it handles and go from there.
I was curious about the M stamp, I don't know if it was a local department that issued it or not.

I have no idea what agencies in my area used 681's. And it could be very well that it's not even from the area that I live in.
I'm close to Medina County and city but I don't know if they were issued these back in the 80's.
I haven't seen the gun in person but from those two pictures that were sent to me by my buddy it looks to be in pretty good shape. But it is pretty easy to clean up a stainless gun. And maybe that's why it has Pachmayer grips on it, the wood may have been in pretty bad shape I don't know.

I picked this one up for $550.00 plus shipping a few years ago, so probably around $600.00 total.

Well it won't let me load a picture right now but I will try back later.

I would say today $6 to $700.00.

Depending on the dash number will depend on if you need the "M" stamp or not. At least I believe.

Any thoughts on MPD? I guess there could be many correct answers, but maybe only a few actually marked them like that example (font and location).

Really hard to say
I actually had a 681 marked MPD very similarly to OPs that I decided to sell but I regretfully never lettered. The lettering might be factory stamped. I can't tell for sure…
I have a 25-5 stamped MPD that letters to Memphis PD. But clearly armorer stamped.
