My Son's Last Flight in the A-10

I'm totally jealous of his career and his opportunity to fly the greatest flying machine ever conceived!

I beg to differ, it is not a flying machine. It is a really big gun with wings.:D

I have always loved the A10. I live near the Air Force Academy and have had the pleasure of seeing them fly over football games or graduations. The A10 and the P38 are my favorites. Got close to a P38 but only seen an A10 in the sky. Love them both.

Thanks to you both! Seems crazy to get rid of the A10.

It would be nice to build new ones, but the last one came off the production line in the early '80s, delivered to my squadron in Alaska about 1985. It's getting long in the tooth, and to retool to build new ones would be cost prohibited.

Great picture!!
When I lived in NW CT, the A10's would fly over the house all the time from the Westfield AF base. They have a distinct sound all their own. I used to try to imagine the feeling of being in the position of having 1 or 2 of those things coming in to get me at attack speed.

I read that the Govt is retiring them??:(

Congrats and thank him for his service, yes a great picture. That would be great to have control of a fighter jet for years. Was stationed at Andrews AFB in DC back in 71-72, regret not taking parachute training to fly with some of the pilots occasionally. I was in the Naval Air Weather. The pilots that came for a pre-flight weather briefing were great people.

The reservists would fly on weekends and would take lobster orders when flying to certain bases. Then transferred to the USS America aircraft carrier off the coast of Vietnam. Would go out on the island and watch the jets take off and land for hours. Cool times in life, Larry

tell him congratulations from an old retired wingnut. I loved the A-10s. got to see them work once and it was an amazing sight, especially seeing the damage they inflicted on some soviet vehicles in a third world country. Lee

It's definitely a sight to behold, especially if one is protecting you!

That's TRUE! I have seen pictures of when they actually removed the gun for service, and it's HUGE!

It's my second favorite aircraft following the B-58 Hustler which my father was a navigator in.

I thought I have seen that they WERE going to build new ones, I guess I am mistaken.

Me too. My understanding is that the fighter pilot folks who get to the top of the AF don't appreciate it and consider the close air version of the F35 will do that mission.

Congratulations! Love the A10, when I lived in Tucson a few of us would regularly hang near D-M to watch the touch & goes. My older son always appreciated them when things got hairy on the ground in Iraq, he was an Army Combat Medic then.

Well done pops, I hope he enjoys more relaxed flights from now on :D.

I thought they could have cleaned that Hawg up a little before the ceremony. They fly them pretty hard at D-M. 24 total w/22 AD. Now he goes back to FedEx flying the 767. I love it when a plan comes together. He won't be jerking that 767 around like he did with the A-10C.

He's gonna have to have a talk with his co-pilot prior to his first FedEx flight and set up a signal to let his co-pilot know when he is gonna take that 767 down for a gun run.
Congratulations to your son and a big THANK YOU!
