Love my stainless revolvers. Every one of these is a shooter, which is why they all wear S&W OEM rubber grips. I know...boring. But I've tried numerous aftermarket grips (wood and rubber) and always come back to these as I just shoot better with them. All were purchased new (including the 1989 M60) and never had a single issue with any of them. The 6" 686 is a tack driver.

Question: Do you use anything other than regular type gun lube to lubricate what needs lubricated? Some time back a friend told me that stainless firearms needs a special lubrication. I did not pay attention at that time, because I did not own one, but now have two. Your thoughts, please.

I'm kinda anxious to see responses to this question.

I drank the stainless revolver Kool-Aid with the 686 in 1981. Most cops prior to that did not like the first batch of stainless revolvers S&W put out. (same thing with first autoloaders)

Shooters will use rubber grips and the current S&W OEM grips on my 686 Plus I believe is exceptional. Thank you for sharing.

I have had several stainless revolvers but currently am down to one.

The S&W Model 625-6 Mountain Gun, 45 ACP. In my opinion, the best 4” N frame S&W has produced.

The revolvers I sold, K, L and one J frame, were all less than exciting.

I can play too …
The 686 4 inch is stock
The others were done over for me in the fashion of the factory “combat revolver package”. Bead blasted and tuned.

I have only one (1) stainless revolver it's a high condition M66-1 2/2". It does not get out of the locker every often. On stainless a Led Away cloth works wonders for an easy clean up. I never felt the need to oil any of the exterior surfaces; just keep them clean.

That’s a beauty. If you’re only gonna have one. That’s the one to have.

Not on revolvers. I use Hoppes gun oil or Weapon Shield oil sparingly. When I had a stainless Colt 1911 I would use Tetra Gun Grease after I had a galling issue with it.

Seabee, Chuck, I've been using stainless S&W revolvers since the '70s. I just use whatever lube I happen to be using on any of my other firearms..

stainless revolovers just use what you use on a blued one.

What the friend of yours was refering to was back when stainless SEMI AUTOS came out, particularly 1911 family in stainless, was that the companies didnt quite understand the correct alloys to use. And the galling was if i recall correctly,

The use of stainless steel slides and frames on 1911-type pistols is strongly discouraged for use on precision builds due to the likelihood of galling. One surface will “dig” into the other, eventually seizing them together.

They changed the stainless steel alloys used, they supposedly started using a different alloy for the slide and frame on same gun. Aparrently if slide and frame were same identical alloy it would make things worse. Apparently stainless guns need more careful attention to detail in fitting slide and frame together..

and do indeed need a lubricant that does not get watery..

Every few years a new Super Lube will be introduced that will reduce trigger pulls and put an impenetrable barrier on your gun. But I’ve always just used plain old 3 in 1 oil.

The great thing about stainless is, if you have some common sense and an ink eraser, your stainless shooter will always look almost new.
