Anyone on here have one?

I'm seriously considering getting a snubby born in the same year as me ('68) but am wondering if it's "worth it". I guess I think it would be neat to have a piece of history for personal and sentimental reasons.

If I do it, a Mod. 49 would be top choice. A 36 might come a close second. But we'll see. It seems as though that year is pretty difficult to confirm.

Three. Two Colt Official Police in .38 Special - one kind of a beater and one pretty nice. And a S&W Chiefs Special also in .38 Special. At least the Chief was "shipped" in '57 as it's more difficult to say when it was manufactured.

Welcome to the forum!

The only birth year firearm I have is a 1951 High-Standard Sport King.
I'd love to find 1951 model 36 Chiefs Special, especially one at an affordable price. :)

Welcome to the forum!

Quite a few here who have obtained birth year guns, for whatever reason. The only "worth it" reason required is "because I want to". I have two birth year guns, a K-22 Masterpiece and a K-38 Masterpiece...because those are the ones that I wanted. Took me quite a long time to find them in the condition I wanted and a price I could live with.

Good luck to you.

Well, if S&W would publish or make available a list of serial numbers by year i'd know, lol. I have the S&W 4th edition but it doesn't have serial numbers by date for most of the models I own.

I might have one or two, but most of my S&Ws are from an era either later or earlier than my 1980 birth year anyways.

I'm turning 45 next month though, so I did just buy a Colt New Frontier SAA in .45 Colt, made in 1980.

I was born in November 1960
Bought this 1960 S&W model 36 that left the factory in November.

Took it out to the range and shot this group off hand at 10 yards.

I would encourage you to try and find your birth year gun. I think you will find a lot of members here have one (or more). It sounds like you know what you want, so go for it and enjoy the road traveled in finding it.

This is mine, shipped nine days before my birth, July 1958. I looked a few years before I found this 44 Magnum.

June 1952.

I have one from that month: Chiefs Special s/n 6634, shipped on
June 12, fifteen days before me.

Also have February and September 1952 Chiefs Specials (second,
third, and fourth photos). The nickel one has a serrated front
sight; the others are smooth. Would like to find an earlier one with
a service type front sight shipped in 1952.

My only 1968 has a 3" lightweight barrel and is my first Chiefs
Special Model 36 without diamond stocks.

I've got several now (1954) including a Highway Patrolman, a Heavy Duty, a Chiefs Special and a few others… it's neat to have guns that are my same age and have aged so much better!

I like that one...It reminds me of one of my favorite carry guns...Not exactly a birth year gun since it shipped in 1927, 20 years before I did...I do have three birth year guns from 1947, all lettered but a bit to long in the barrel to conceal well...Here's my 1927 carry gun, a M&P Target in .38 Spl......Ben

I had but one---an M&P Target shipped in December of 1936.

It's a mystery gun to boot!

It was shipped to a Rail Road police officer at a cost of $31.23. I'm thinking that sum of money was A BUNCH for someone at the low end of the wage scale at the time----and I can't for the life of me figure why he bought it--because it came to me brand new.

I figure he was going to try it out at a Long Shooters meet---those who shot at live turkeys at the outset----- paper targets of a turkey later on---and hit them at ranges out to 300 yards. The gun was carrying (and lettered with) a Marble Ivory Bead front sight--- which was made to order for such endeavors. If that was on his mind at the outset, he took one look at the goings on at a match, decided those guys were nutty, took the gun home, and put it in his sock drawer. And if you too think those guys were nutty, they're not!

I tried it, and actually hit the target! And if you're thinking I hit it first crack out of the box, think again!!

I've only found one birth year revolver and I bought it. It's a very clean M&P 38 special 2" round butt from late 1948. A guy I know bought it from his friend in 1960. His friend bought it new in Chicago and was a LEO and carried it as a backup. A few years ago my friend started thinning his collection and sold it to me. He had owned it since 1960.

I have another beautiful M&P 38 spl 4" factory nickel and aftermarket pearls from my mother's birth year of 1920 and have a very nice K22 from 1955 which is my wife's birth year. I think my 66-2 is from my son's birth year of 1982.

I keep my eyes open at gun shows but have yet to see something I'd carry home.
