Ship My Gun - Opinions

1. Great idea for a service. Might not be the cheapest possible way, but sure sounds easy.

2. After a bad experience (not with this aspect of their company), I want nothing to do with Bud's.

I don't think it will work if the receiving FFL will not accept from a non FFL.
Additionally there could be an issue if the FFL is not registered with, nor wants to deal with SMG, leading to a delay in shipment.

As I get it, technically the receiving FFL is receiving the gun from ShipMyGun. (I think you, technically, are shipping on SMG's behalf. They send you their prepaid, by you, UPS label to use.) I think, based on Ladder13's quote of SMG's FAQs below, this is not correct.

The receiving FFL does need to be registered with SMG. There are SMG registered FFLs all over the country, but it may well be that your buyer's preferred FFL is not registered, and he will either need to accept a nearby LGS who is registered, or buyer and seller need to agree to use a non-registered FFL and on how to pay for it.

On one occasion, after determining that an FFL was registered with SMG, I called them to tell them I was shipping to them using SMG, and to expect the package. They said they would only accept shipment from an FFL. I explained about SMG, and that they were registered with SMG. After a short hold to confer with someone, the speaker came back to say that would be fine.

It's been a couple of years since I used the service, but IIRC Ship My Gun functions as the FFL on the sending end.

The FFL in Las Vegas I was shipping to wasn't on their preferred list, but he had no problem receiving it and SMG had not problem "sending" it.

It solves the problem of UPS not accepting firearms shipments from none FFLs, and it makes the process less expensive by far.

At least when I was in MA it was hard to find FFLs that would do outbound transfers and many wouldn't do inbound transfers of handguns.

I don't think it will work if the receiving FFL will not accept from a non FFL.

Gun Shipping Faqs

Buds FFL is not involved, they just provide the label.

"Yes, you MUST include a copy of your driver's license. Dealers will not accept a private party transfer without it. Failing to include your drivers license could delay the recipient from being able to accept their transfer or result in the firearm being returned to you at an additional cost"

I told gunsmith Frank Glenn about this ship method a few years ago, he didn't know. He then told me it would help his business as people could save some money, and/or save hassle, sending guns for repair.

I ma thinking about using them on future shipment. The last time I shipped on with my regular guy he told me he doesn't like doing them and I am the only one he does them for. Then I saw how much the shipping ended up and I realized he didn't make any $ on it. He charged me $60 and the shipping with insurance and signatures was $39. And he is 40 minutes away.

Here is an issue:

UPS has been closing their "UPS Customer Service Centers." These are UPS hubs with a customer service counter open to the public. These are the only UPS sites that can be used for ShipMyGun users.

When I checked the SMG site the last time we had one of these threads, some months ago, it seemed to me that SMG was saying that UPS Stores or other UPS sites would now accept shipment, a change from the previous restriction since UPS Service Centers were closing.

However, when I checked SMG FAQs just now, I saw this:

So, either I was mistaken in my previous understanding, or SMG and UPS have gone back to UPS Customer Service Centers only.

Further, I can't make the UPS Find Locations tool work: https://www.ups.com/dropoff?loc=en_US

I think most, if not all, UPS Customer Service Centers in my area have closed.

None of the local shops I like to use will accept from Ship My Gun. They will however cut me some slack on fees when I need to ship something I've sold. The state of Colorado is doing everything it can to make firearms ownership, purchase, transfer, possession as difficult as possible. I will continue to patronize my local shops to do my part in keeping them open.

Apologies for the drift.

We have/had two in Raleigh, convenient for me. One now shows permanently closed and the other temporarily closed.
All our packages either came from Raleigh or Durham, previously. The Durham hub still shows open.

I use a local FFL to ship a gun. I hand him the gun and no worries.
