Am I “THE VILLAGE IDIOT” ...again?!

One of the pictures of the four line address looks questionable but another one shows the four lines looking ok. Same with the small logo on the left side; one picture shows it blurred but it looks ok in another.

The side plate seam looks tight and the screws do not appear to be dished. Might be a refinish but a pretty good one if it is.

After looking at the other pics, I agree.

This made me tired . . .

Howdy Smith & Wesson Forum Members!

Did ALL Y’ALL take yesterday OFF?!

Or am I THE VILLAGE IDIOT ...again?!

Last night, GB auction for Item 1090629944 (Description below) INEXPLICABLY closed with ONLY 1-BID ... from me:

Description:
4” barrel S&W Hand Ejector 4th Model .44 Target Model of 1950 (pre model 24) revolver

Seller stated:

"Stamped on the inside of the right grip is 158 over 224

Grips are numbered, but do not match the revolver

Does not appear to have been re-blued

No rework date

This revolver belonged to an 83 yr old dealer who passed"

I am at a loss to understand WHY I was the ONLY Bidder for this revolver!

Unless I’m MISSING something (which, unfortunately, is OFTEN the case!), this is a widely recognized SCARCE variant of the highly-esteemed S&W Hand Ejector 4th Model .44 Target Model of 1950 (pre model 24) revolver!

Reference pages 188 & 189 of "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" 4th Edition.

So I wonder WHY there were NO OTHER Bidders?!

Here I sit (CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC) thinking I got away with MURDER!

I’m just waiting for "the other shoe to drop" and KILL MY BUZZ!

Was I "THE VILLAGE IDIOT”...again?!

Or can "even a blind squirrel can find a nut once in a while”?!

I welcome your CANDID insights!

GO AHEAD!
LET ME HAVE IT!

Kind regards,
The ROOKIE Collector

Except for the die hard collectors, I would wager that $2K+ for a revolver is a bit steep. Not saying it's not worth the price, just that it's hard to justify that in today's economy.

Beautiful gun though!

Nope....you're not the idiot. I am.

Somehow that one got past all of my normal searches. It may have been the "44sp" part of the description. I thought I knew every .44 special, .44 spc, and .44 spl that was on Gunbroker, but obviously not.

If I had seen it you would have had competition, and no I don't think you overpaid. Happy it went to a good home. :D

Screenshot and pics from the auction for future reference. GB links go dead after a few months. It really should be a Forum requirement that anyone who posts a link to a completed GB auction includes an uploaded screenshot. Otherwise in three months it will all be a mystery.

I don't see any obvious signs of a refinish and think you did great at that price assuming it turns out to be original. Barrel appears to be original, you'll want to letter it to find out for sure. The 5th Edition says $1250 for "good" condition in 6.5 inch but sales of 4 inch guns have been reported in the $5k-$6k range for lettered 1950 44s; and 25% premium for a bright blue finish. Assuming it letters and is original bright blue finish you got a great buy. Even if it turns out to be refinished, but an original 4 inch, you're ok. Only if it turns out to have a cut barrel and a refinish did you pay too much. And in no case are you the village idiot for buying it. There were only 1200 of these guns built and any fan of S&W .44s wants one, especially a 4 inch.

I see you're in Allen, TX, not far from me. I'd love to see it some day.

Definitely did not overpay, even after all the fees and taxes...Since according to Bill Cross' count, there were only 411 of these shipped in 4" configuration, the pot is a small one at best...Len has 6, I only have 3 and now this one has eluded my notice...

Maybe I should change my mind about participating in auctions...:o...Ben

Only 4 of my 4" 1950's letter as original. One shipped as a 6.5" and was returned to the factory to have a 4" barrel installed, and one is "open on the books" with no record of completion or shipment.

Then there's this one......:p

(No Ben, you still can't have it. You could send your 3 over to Arizona for a visit though.

(No Ben, you still can't have it. You could send your 3 over to Arizona for a visit though.
But that would leave only four 6 1/2" and the one 3 1/2" to play together...And you know how important it is to keep even numbers among .44 caliber 1950's...They are a superstitious bunch...No, my idea is a better choice all around...:)...Ben

I'm with shotguncoach I don't know how I missed it but I did, I think you did good 4" 44 specials are my favorites.

I am NOT “THE VILLAGE IDIOT” !

Howdy Smith & Wesson Forum (S&WF) Members!

I am DELIGHTED (and RELIEVED) to inform all y’all that:
  • I am NOT THE VILLAGE IDIOT” !
  • The Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation (S&WHF) researched my S&W Hand Ejector 4th Model 44 Target Model of 1950 revolver with 4-inch barrel Serial#S98596 and confirmed the following:

  • Shipped To: Arthur Cook Supply Corp. in Laurel, MD
  • Ship Date: October 25, 1955
  • Description: .44 Target Blue 4”

My revolver was included with three (3) other .44 Target Blue 4-inch barrel revolvers.

Please see two (2) attachments:
  1. Shipping Book Extract (Row#9)
  2. Invoice (Line#6)

Which do not specify if the finish was:
  • Bright Blue or
  • Matte or Satin Blue

Finish:
It remains to be seen if this revolver has:
  • A Bright Blue or Matte or Satin Blue finish
  • Original finish or has been re-blued

But the consensus opinion of S&WF Members suggests that the finish is original.

And a VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE member of the Smith & Wesson Forum informed me that the finish is Bright Blue not Matte or Satin!

I have ordered a S&WHF Letter of Authenticity.

Upon delivery, I will post clearer pictures of the revolver, roll marks and the S&WHF Letter of Authenticity.

In conclusion, it appears that "even a blind squirrel can find a nut once in a while”?!

I am absolutely THRILLED to add this SUPER SCARCE 4-inch revolver to my modest collection including two (2) other S&W Hand Ejector 4th Model 44 Target Model of 1950 revolvers:

  1. One with a factory Lettered “PINTO” finish and COKE stocks/grips
  2. The other with an AWESOME engraved Silver & Gold inlaid FIRE BREATHING DRAGON and genuine IVORY stocks/grips

Please see attached pictures.

Thank ALL Y’ALL for generously sharing your insights and comments with me!

And a SPECIAL THANKS to my friend Hondo44 who inspired my confidence to “pull the trigger” on this purchase based on his EXPERT knowledge!

The Smith & Wesson Forum is an invaluable source of knowledge for ROOKIE collectors like me!

Thank you!
I appreciate your input!

Kind regards,
