Recently I purchased a Model 59 in great shape. Still in it's original box with paperwork. I thought it'd be cool to have in my collection.

It came with one magazine and I was easily able to find an extra original mag in like new condition. But in searching for mags I saw that Smith had factory 20rd mags and I had to have one. I located what appeared to be the correct one on GB and bought it.
Unfortunately, the stop doesn't allow it to fully seat into the gun. Yes, I could probably grind it off, but it'd look tacky.
Can someone please tell me which mag I need for this gun? I am not interested in an aftermarket or even a MecGar marked one. I want it to be stamped either with the SW logo or at least the S&W on the floorplate.
Does such a magazine even exist and how do I know it's correct from an online seller?
As near as I can tell, my 59 was made in the late 1970's. The manual in the box shows a date of 02/78.
Thanks so much!

Those magazines were made for the 469 - you may not find what you're looking for.

Mec-Gar and ProMag did make 20 round magazines for the 59xx pistols. Of the two, the Mec-Gar is most likely to fit and function correctly. ProMag magazines, not to be confused with PMag, a totally different company, are often good for honing one's feed jam clearing technique.

Here is one in my Target Champion , with the slide locked back . In the one picture you can see the S&W .

2 different magazines, depending on frame size

The 20 round magazine for the small frame guns (469, 669, 6904, 6906) is part # 190330000

The 20 round magazine for the large frame guns (59/459/559/659/5904/5906) is part # 190320000

Sent you a PM that may help

Judging from the mag in the listing I posted, which one do YOU think I need? :)
I assume I have a "large frame gun"?

The one for the small frame guns has 2 stops; the first stop (higher up the front of the magazine) keeps it from seating all the way to the magazine catch notch on large frame guns. The one for the large frame guns has only one stop. If you place them side by side, you'll see that they simply added the second stop to the magazine for the small frame guns so it can't be over-inserted, leaving the original single stop on there as well. If you have a Model 59, you need the one with just the single stop (190320000). If you have one with the single stop and it won't fully insert and lock, I don't know what to tell you, as it was made for the Model 59 size guns.

My guess is S&W was just simplifying their supply chain by creating a second stop on the ones to be used with small frame guns

This one was suggested, but if you look carefullly, it has a stop as well.

Yes, but the stop is located further down the body, allowing it to seat fully in the 59 series large size frame.

This 20 round magazine is one of several I picked up years ago which has the "S&W" marked baseplate. This example has just one stop and fits my 669 as shown but not my 5906. Maybe it's a later version of part# 190330000?

On the bright side, you now have a good excuse to pick up a 469 or 669 that would make a nice addition to your collection.

Update:

I finally found the correct mag that fit!
I didn't buy this one but found one still in the shrink wrapped card at a show.
Thanks to all who tried to help!

Nice! Hopefully it didn't cost a premium from a dealer, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet. I always enjoy finding items from casual tableholders, like someone cleaning out their garage or safe. Usually friendlier prices and pleasant banter, plus a stronger "thrill of discovery" feeling.
Post a few pics of all if you have the time. And be on the lookout for that 2nd gen 469!

I bit the bullet.
I could have bought 2 of the Mec Gar and had money left over.
But I wanted all OEM.
It's all about the investment for me at this point in life. Sadly I have little time to shoot ANY of my guns. Self employed all my life so zero 401K or stock investments.
The difference is I can look and feel and admire my investments. Not so much with a stock certificate.
