Tulsa Show Finds

Set up Fri.afternoon downstairs rain,I'm sure increased attendence Sat. as it was crowded couldn't say about upstair as I was behind table pretty much whole show. But would be really suprised if there weren't a few 4" N frame .357's lurking around. Most of the time Sat. was happy to have tables to be behind lol.

I beg to differ...You were standing in front of my nickel 4" 27-2 when we shook hands...Or maybe the one you bought is a 27 no dash......Ben

You are correct sir! My apologies. I stand corrected, I met lots of great guys and looked at lots of beautiful revolvers. The discussion surrounding your now 3.5” model 24 (pre 24 maybe, I don’t recall the exact model) and how it’s been factory shortened 3 times is what I recalled most of our meeting. I hope you had a great show!

I remember when a young guy, working in a factory, driving a beater, and living in a rented trailer could afford Smith and Wessons.

Seems those days are long gone.

The best part of any show for me is talking to others and learning what I can about our revolvers...I don't do overnight travel as well as I used to, and this may very well have been my last Tulsa venture...I'm nowhere near wealthy so I need to offset the expense with a little income...That hasn't happened in the last two Tulsa shows...

I sold one of mine, and it went to a young member here for just a smidgen over what I had in it...But I did buy two K-22 Outdorsmans and another 27 no dash...So I'll have something to do for the next few days besides recuperate...:D...Ben

Got these two Hi Standard 102’s. Trophy and Citation for $850 and $750. All the S&W guns in my interest were way over priced. Didn’t see a single M52 of M41 below 1K.

Ah yes, the infamous 102 Space Guns! I spent a lot of time in an informal bullseye league shooting a 103 Citation like your 102. Lotsa fun! I kinda miss those old days about 35+ years ago doing regular shooting (or should I say “shooting regularly”?) I think mine ended up with some sort of extreme target grips that probably hurt my scores more than they helped… but the shore were purdy.

I rarely look at what I bought a gun for when selling it. Because frankly, it doesn’t matter. It’s only worth what someone will pay for it. None of my guns were purchased on speculation or as an investment. Sure they may appreciate in value, I hope they do. However once I lose interest in something I might as well sell it and move on. Having a gun I feel is worth $2k in the safe and having $1500 in my hand are 2 different things. I buy what I like, often paying a small premium because I value my limited time and don’t have the time to engage on a treasure hunt hoping to find an uneducated or desperate seller. I’ve gotten lucky in the past as most do occasionally. I’ve also driven up prices I suppose by overpaying. Right now I have more money than time. I know at some point that pendulum swings back and it’s a different season in life.

Something SOCRATES should have chisel in stone.."I value my TIME and dont have any to engage on a treasure hunt hoping to find an uneducated or desperate seller" A nice tidbit of wisdom others should take notice of. maybe someday when they reach the age of realizing the games over....

At some point the hunt became the focal point of fun for me since I haven't shot any gun in over 15 years...All my guns can shoot beyond my capabilities so there's nothing to prove there......Ben

I picked up a very nice 64-2 with the original stocks for $600. I saw a 940 in the box for $850 and should have bought it, but was looking for a 63-3 2" and didn't have enough cash for both. I I think I saw that 629 Mountain gun and nearly bought it. That gentle man had quite a few appropriately priced Smiths. I liked the 4" 629 round butt with the Goncalo Alves combats he had too.

With the return of new factory No lock mountain guns, I think a lot of folks were trying to unload theirs if they had any inkling before the new ones were readily available and the value of the prior No lock ones returns to earth. I saw more 44 and 45lc mountain guns for sale at this show then I’ve seen in a decade or longer.

I was upstairs on Sat. Pretty crowded.

That show needs to be a Fri/Sat/Sun show, IMO.

I was mildly surprised to find quite a few 19s and 686s in the 6-700 range. Others were lower too. I think you're right. Also noticed several younger guys taking notice of revolvers and speaking intelligently about them...

It already is...For $100 the public can come in and browse on Friday, and many did...I set up the tables on Thursday evening, then found what I bought on Friday...Saturday and Sunday I was at the tables...It was a long drive for us back home, so we started packing around noon and were on the road at 1400 hours......Ben

Seems like I recall a K22 new in 1948 cost $48. While an IJ or other revolver would be $15. I don't think that kid was making $48 a month much less a week, so...........Same with Orvis bamboo fly rods. Back in the day they cost about a month's wages. Some things have always been expensive.

This is news to me!! Great news. What are the hours on Friday? Are most of the sellers usually set up and doing business on Friday? I’ll gladly pay $100, play hookie from work, and get thru as many tables as possible on Friday and still have my weekend. Only downside is no one is going to be wheeling and dealing much on day zero with all the show still to come. It’ll be full price or take your chances.

I disagree...My philosophy is find something you like, make the best deal possible and move on...In my browsing I found two K-22 Outdoorsman's and a 27 no dash I wanted...I talked some with the sellers who saw cash standing in front of them...I negotiated an aggregate reduction of $1250 of the intended selling prices by just telling each seller what the guns' values to me were...Each one said yes and the exchanges were made...None of us were obligated to agree with the other...:)...Ben

EDIT: I think on Friday the doors opened at 0800 for the public...

Set-up mainly takes place on Thur.& Fri. as Fri.is the "advertised" set up day. Never been there on Thu.but on Fri. most of the set occurs so keep this in mind if you're going as an attendee. Don't know abiut the other vendors but we like to get squared away before getting into sales...in other words we don't dig thru all soft, hard cases and firearms boxes so someone can have a " look-see" if we did set up woul be impossible. If a gun is out on the table thats a different dtorey. Everybody does it different. But by the time Sun.afternoon rolls around"I'm jus' lookin" gets pretty old. But thats part of it lol!

Black insert on a nickel gun makes sense to someone who is actually going to shoot it primarily daytime hours. Red inserts shine well only at dawn and dusk. Yellow inserts have their place too.
I am not a fan of any of them. I really like good old blue steel Patridge front sights.
