Beretta "92 FS"

Mas Ayoob, Ernest Langdon and Bill Wilson are all strong supporters of the Beretta 92.

It's a great gun that has evolved over the past 50 some years.

A lot of the issues with the Beretta in the "Sandbox" was the "low bid" mags!

IMHO the Compact now 15+1 and the Centurion 18+1 are better guns than the 1985 M-9.

Everyone talks about Glock...... if it was so great why are they on Gen 5?

The Beretta 92 is one of my favorite firearms, but unfortunately when the time came to finally purchase one, I strayed...

I just plain like the frame mounted safety better. Yeah, yeah, I know... Beretta offers models with frame mounted safeties, but they're way more expensive than the base models, have no decocker, some are SAO, and others have steel frames and weigh substantially more as a result.
Rest assured, had Beretta simply offered a variant of the 92A1 with a frame mounted safety, then I would have chosen that instead, but they didn't, they still don't, and frankly I'm happy with the PT92.

I love em.
This one I did a few mods to: Single side G-decocker, gold bead front sight, checkered frame, full LTT action parts.
My fave.

The reliability issues wear often due to cheap aftermarket magazines that the military and others used. Something about sand/grit and a non coated internal surface. If you're interested, the Small Arms Solutions video guy explains it in greater detail.

I haven't checked for a couple of days, but Mike Heffron had a fancy/schmancy one for sale on his sight.

Most folks seem to rave about them, but my father wasn't a fan either. He said he had issues with their reliability as well.

My son carried one during his tour in Afghanistan. He likes the gun but said a lot of the mags they had were junk. Said it was common to rotate the mags being carried, had feeding problems if a mag was left loaded for very long. A lot of the guys would tear them down regularly, clean them and give the springs a little stretch and that seemed to help. A couple mags rode home in his gear, they work fine for loading and shooting the same day. Haven't used them other than that, have Beretta factory mags if I'm going to have mine sitting around loaded.

The empty weight of my Beretta 92fs Inox is 2 pounds 2 ounces.

My gen. 2 Glock 19 weighs 1 pound 7.5 ounces.

My gen. 1 Glock 17 weighs 1 pound 8 ounces.

My S&W 65-3 weighs 1 pound 15.5 ounces.

My S&W SD9 weighs 1 pound 6.4 ounces.

The Beretta 92fs Inox weighs 2.5 ounces more than the S&W 65-3. The Beretta carries ten more cartridges and offers considerably faster reloads.

I love the Glock 19X and I own two of them, I had the Sig 229 in 40S&W and liked me... but if while chatting with friends someone says to me "just for fun tell me what weapon you would take with you to Beirut, we leave tomorrow morning"... The answer will be unanimous and says 92, but I add "please let me bring a 629 4inches too"
We only used Beretta magazines, the Mec-Gar seemed too cheap with the sheet metal base plate, I preferred the factory ones with the die-cast aluminum base. However, a base pad helped.

IIRC Bill Wilson and Ayoob made a Wilson Combat video where one of the two said if he had to use a gun right out of the box for self-defense it would be the Beretta 92.

I've had a 92F Compact and other 92s since 1988 only one FTF/FTE and that was a reload with a deformed case.

I have a 92fs that was made in 1995. Bought by my local PD direct from the factory in Italy. Since that was during the assault weapons ban, it came with 3 15 rd mags marked LEO/Military Only.
The officer it was issued to bought it a couple of years later when they switched to something else. He later sold it to a co-worker of mine who a couple of years later sold it to me.
30 years, 4 owners and its never left my little city since the factory sent it here.
I won't deny its a fine pistol and a great shooter, but I just never fell in love with it. It currently lives in my "Get Home" bag just in case. ;)

Mine is actually an M96. I bought the 40 cal version because it converts easily to 9mm giving me a choice of both. When I first got it I found it to be a bit large in the grip so I replaced them with these from Pachmayer (if I remember correctly). World of difference. It is pictured in its 9mm version.

I've had plenty of time behind a 92FS/M9 and it is a good pistol, but once I retired from Uncle Sugars Army, I quickly sold it and never looked back.
The gun was too large for what it was. I hated the slide mounted safety. the double action trigger pull was long and heavy and the gun was heavy.

Was it reliable? for the most part, but a lot of broken locking blocks and trigger return springs (including my personally owned one that got a wolf replacement). Both issues Beretta fixed on later version (There up to an M9A4 for all you Glock haters....)

Pistols were never big deal in the Big Army which is why they hold onto them for years and the training is lackluster at best.

Small arms does not do the majority of killing on the battlefield. HE does.
I think the Beretta got a bit of a raw deal from the Army over the Modular handgun program. But when Sig Lowballed the price, it was hard to not pick SIG. I've shot the 320's/M17. It's a decent handgun that does what it's supposed to.

I think a lot of it was marketing to sell the "latest and greatest", but Beretta has made a number of changes over the years as well 92 92S, 92SB, 92F, 92FS, and finally the 92X (supposedly fixing some of the complaints with the 92FS.

I carried 92/M9/96s at various times throughout my career. Beautiful and reliable but I always thought they were too big for the 9mm round and I disliked the tiny, integral front sight. I thought by adding a dovetailed front sight was a huge improvement. I currently only have one, a 92A1.

The size allows for much more accurate shooting, IMO. Less muzzle flip too, IMO.

My original 92FS is capable of amazing accuracy. I've added the Wolff spring kit to better the trigger pull & it works wonderfully.

I'm not a fan of the safety relocation but I understand it.
