Inherited a gun

I've seen asking prices as high as $900 for Nickle m-19s in excellent condition. I don't know if they sell that high or not but its very hard to find 40-60 year old pinned barrel nickel Smiths that still look great!
I haven't even cleaned it yet, thank you

Well, this one shipped in 1977, and it is flawless. I bought it at a gun show in 2011.
(Note: It is wearing Magna stocks in this picture because I was using it with some female students with small hands. Currently, it has target stocks back on it.)

Thinking ins. value would be around $800-900... goodyears probably hurt it it bit. I'd keep.a shsrp eye pealed for original stocks. NICE FIND! (

Take the grips off and clean under them; rubber can trap condensation. Grips are very individual based on hand size and the like. I came up in firearms when the default response was to remove wood grips and pitch them, then replace with rubber. Most of the time, for most uses, rubber grips are exponentially more practical, but that is not always true. I find most factory wood grips to be underwhelming, but as I note, that can be very individual.

Yeah. Cops I worked with almost always changed out their wood Magna grips for rubber Pachmayr. There is no other grip that I shoot as well with as the Pachmayr Gripper Professional with the open backstrap.

That's a nice one. If you post the first couple digits of the SN like 10K7xxx we can give you a rough shipping date. A very popular model with a beautiful finish.

Why are you interested in insurance for one gun? Should be covered under basic coverage That's a nice one. My son had 4 stolen with no rider policy and they covered all of them in a rental home.

That is a nice looking Model 19-4, appears to be in great condition. I would remove the rubber grips as rubber will trap and hold moisture under the grips and cause rust.

As for cleaning, disregard the warning of "never use solvents containing ammonia on nickel guns". That warning is valid for any plating that has an intermediary copper plating between the steel and the nickel, but S&W never used a copper plating. I do not recommend letting any solvent just sit on the finish for hours or days, so be sure to wipe off all of the solvent once cleaned. To protect the nickel finish, Renaissance Wax, Johnson's Paste Floor Wax, or pure Carnuba wax works really well to protect the nickel finish and make it pop.

For value, I would say a conservative estimate for a quick sale would be $600, but a more realistic estimate would be closer to $800, even more if you live in an area where handgun sales are heavily restricted.
