I came across this "nickel" 28-2, but I find myself suspecting it is not factory nickel. I didn't have time to inspect it, so I'm not sure about "N" stamps, etc. What makes me suspicious is that the hammer and trigger look to be nickel also. Additionally, SCSW v.4 doesn't have much info on nickel 28s. Thoughts?

There is one at a gun shop that i frequent occasionally. They want $1995.00 for it. They won't believe its not original. Its been there over a year. I guess they are waiting for that sucker who is born every minute???
They don't want to believe it because they want a ridiculous price for it. Even if it were factory nickel it wouldn't be worth $2K. The trigger and hammer make it clear it isn't a factory nickel plating; look at the extractor star, it should be blued if it were factory. There would also be a N stamped on the side of the butt frame and a N stamped on the breech face of the cylinder along the outside edge between two charge holes. Tell them to look it up if they don't believe it, but I'd pass on that gun if it were half the price.

I have one that was done right before I found it in a pawn shop. From everything I have found on the 28-2 my 4" would not be original and there is no N on it either. I should letter it some day just to see where it was sent but I would be shocked if it was factory nickel. I think there were very few that were nickel and they were not 4" barrels from what I have read.

There are several good threads on them on the forum. FHP had a few five inchers and later 54 (4 ") or so were made, I think for a distributor. these later ones were N prefix. Here is one that sold at auction. It has the brushed nickel finish. I believe th FHP guns were standard bright nickel.

First clue that it is a refinished S&W is the polished and plated trigger and hammer. Second clue it that it is a polished Model 28. $920 for such a specimen would be a hard "no" for me. These days, $900 would be appropriate for a 4-inch Model 28 with the factory satin blue finish with original stocks and in excellent, almost no visible wear condition.
