I got hooked on Taylor Sheridan-Kevin Costner's series with the cowboys. Loved Yellowstone, Kelly Reilly & the gun handling. Not necessarily in that order..........
Since the second season of 1923 just got released, I ordered it. I re-watched all of the first season so it would be fresh in my mind, plot wise. Got the second season in & binge watched it in two days. Wow. Some super-cool action that's not completely unbelievable (which is rare) and some parts that just broke my heart. Not gonna give away any plot lines here. LOL!
Much more than Yellowstone & 1883, 1923 is certainly R-rated. So be aware of that if someone doesn't want/need to watch it. Not just boobs either.
Having the 1883/1923/Yellowstone collection allows me to think that the 1923 series might be the best one. All three have the battle between encroachment & the dangers of its time. But 1923 shows the straddle of horses to autos, phone lines coming in, electric coming in, etc. It's a subplot that's intriguing to this history buff.
Plus, 1923 allows a wide variety of firearm options. Yellowstone is AR-15/M-16 heaven, 1883 is lever actions & single shot pistols. 1923 allows Tommy guns, Unertl-scoped rifles, lever actions, old revolvers & my personal fav: .416 Rigby double rifle.
The Spenser Dutton character shoots the dbl rifle with excellent technique, IMO, which shows some lessons. Why, he even reloads. Yes, he uses a bad guy or three as a backstop too.
Timothy Dalton plays a wickedly evil character. He's involved in much of the R-rated parts. He is a "robber baron" personified in the series. Excellent performance by Dalton.
Helen Mirror uses a dbl bbl & scoped rifle with great effect in the movie. Ironic, as she's English with all their gun control beliefs. But she operates the bolt on the rifle like she knows what she's doing.
Much like 1883, there's very little humor to be found in the entire series. As mentioned, there's parts that broke my heart & I am one hard-hearted SOB. LOL!
The ending is doesn't tie everything up in one bow like 1883 & Yellowstone but it does complete a major narrative.
If folks are on the lookout for good, decent quality storytelling, this is a good series to watch in the dregs of summer. Lord knows, there's nothing else worth watching on tv these days now that football has ended.
