So maybe you can enlighten me... I love 44 magnum a lot, it's my favorite caliber. 44 special is entirely new to me. What is the reason people like 44 special over 44 magnum, if 44 magnum can do both (at least as far as a revolver specifically tailored to 44 special). I bought it because I've always heard it's accurate, and I loved the look of the gun, I also like 3" barrels, but the 44 special aspect was new to meI know how you feel. I have one i bought new in August 84 to go along with my 4" 24, I bought in 83. Love them both. So much so that I bought the the same pair 4" and 3" in 624's when they came out in 85. I followed Skeeter in his love for 44 specials.

You aren't wrong. However, the tapered barrels change balance and handling. And. Skeeter was cool.So maybe you can enlighten me... that is an absolutely good explanation and makes perfect sense. LOL @ brunetteWell for me it was the writings of Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton, that got me hooked on 44 Specials. My thoughts, when I first started handguning, were much like yours. Why buy a 38 special when a 357 could shoot both. The same was true of my first 44 magnum bought in mid 70's. My progression was m-17, m-18 then m-27 and a m-29 4". Then I bought a Colt SAA in 44 Special. Shooting it was so pleasant and accurate using skeeters loads. I was hooked and lusted after a smith in 44 special.
The Smith 24"s and 624's came along, they were lighter and easier to carry then my 4" m-29. For 90% of my shooting, I didn't need a full house magnum. The 44 special filled that bill perfectly, easy to carry, accurate, could be loaded to comfortably fill 90% of my needs, I loved the look and recoil similar to my 45 acp m-25. It was just fun.
I have had M-29's from 3" to 6.5" I enjoyed them and still do for specific purposes. My current favorite is a 629 mountain, which i use during hunting. Until a few years back 44 Specials were not allowed. I guess it boils down to that I just enjoy shooting them and big holes vs my 357's. Also, when I pick up my magnum ammo its full bore and likewise 44 special ammo both have their place. Also I have no chance for the confusion, that can be caused with light and heavy loads in same casings.
Not sure this answers your question Tallboy its hard to explain, much like wether you like a blonde or a brunette.
Nice grips! My hands are funny...Normal count of digits, but large, and find small grips more comfortable. I've often wondered about using this style, but haven't found any place that has them or examples I could try.S&W Model 24-3 3” Lew Horton (1985). It cannot be overstated how much I love this gun
