I don't know the back story, but new S&W factory 5900/6900 are pretty available and affordable. i got some 6906 mags from the Trading Post, i haven't run them yet, but they pass the sniff test.

The mag on the left is the new one, the mag on the right is OG.. the one with the chipped floorplate is the OG.

I hope they start making 7/8 round 9mm, and .40 soon!

I'd like to pick up 3 more 12-rd mags for my 6906, just for range mags. Can you post a link to this Trading Post source?

As I recall the "new" 6906 mags currently available are made by United Defense and are actually a clone of the original "late" SW 12 rd mags with 4 holes on Left and 5 on Right with unmarked finger rest plastic baseplate matching down to the S O markings on the stainless sleeve. No SW logo, but I have older SW mags with no logo.

Unfortunately visually they are an almost exact clone and indistinguishable to my eyes from original S&W mags. The blue ones are different in that they include the S O markings on the sleeve which I have never seen on the few late blue SW mags with 4 holes left and 5 holes Right. The vast majority of my blue SW 69xx mags are 1 hole Left and either 2 or 5 holes Right.

The silver United Defense 6906 mags appear to be more shiney than my SW mags, but my SW mags exhibit some variation in finish over time so that is not a clear distinction.

I do not have enough experience with use to comment on functionality other than to say I keep them separate and have had NO bad experience with the United Defense mags - but I would have preferred a clear differentiation rather than an indistinguishable clone.

I believe there were some MecGar 69xx mags (10rd?) made up from a different brand sleeve with a longish plastic base - can not comment on these, but the metal sleeve MecGar 59xx mags work well.

As to the 5906 mags which started us down this track, the ones I have bought from Midway are SW mags in SW marked packaging and function as they should. But I believe those are the only 3rd generation mags still being produced by (or more likely for) SW.

no problem.. i had to re-read the rules but I think it's ok to post this.. if not , i will take it down..

Robertson Trading Post - s&w 6900 12 rd mags

I've seen them a few other places, but not sure if they're from the same manufacturer or not. The site says these are from Wayne Machine.

Where did one acquire such an item? And, did they have any for the 4006 series?
There are frequently good Used 11rd 4006 mags on GB for under $30 and Mag Springs, Followers, and Baseplates are readily available to refurbish if so inclined. Just looked and seller claims to have in excess of 100 - they will most likely be marked LE and have red baseplates.

Thanks! …. The Robertson links mentions the stainless 12-rd mags are machined for the Taiwan Defense Industry(?).

Thanks. I figure all the OEM mags are roughly 20-30+ years old, regardless of seller. The Trading Post link above also has some OEM 4006 mags with the original/early yellow followers. My 4006 is an early one and has the same mags. So, I ordered 3. Once they arrive, I'll figure out if they need to be refurbished and get the parts. I'm hoping they will just need a good cleaning.

it's kind of funny, but i'm having an easier time finding mags now for my s&w's than i was 10 years ago, at least in the double stack 9mm flavor.. I'd love to carry my CS9 and 3913/14 more but the lack of factory or mecgar magazines holds me back..

I figure on replacing most springs in used mags. Suggest you compare length of the springs to eachother and to a new spring. Recognize that new springs will take a set after some use which is normal, but my rule of thumb is to replace any used springs that are significantly shorter than other used springs or more than about a half inch shorter than new springs.
