I have all square butt revolvers, haven't even seen a round butt. I'm just curious,

Why are both made?

What are the advantages, disadvantages of each?

Which do you prefer and why?

Very god question, I have wondered the same. Probably a concealment issue. Or what is comfortable in you hand.

Funny I have all RB snubies except a 2 " model 10 SB. Recently picked up an old SB model 36 and really could not tell the difference

Vive la difference ! It's like women . . . . if they were all the same it would be boring . . . .:D

Crimson Trace makes a product for a round butt but not for a square butt....go figure.

I don't know "why" but I do know round butts make it easier for smaller hands & fingers to reach the trigger.

I prefer the round butt because my hands are kind of small and I really like N frames! Those square butt Ns seem like they were made for gorilla hands. :)

Not 100% sure, but I think they quit making the Square butt (SB) about 2000 or maybe even earlier. You might (like I have done) been told over the phone that the new gun in the new box says "SB" on it. Only to get it home and find out it is a RB.

I shot the SB in SLOW fire and the RB in TIMED and RAPID fire. Shot an RB Model 14 for combat or 686 SB AFS. The SB just feels bigger in your hand. Expeically with teh stock wood grips.

The roundbutt revolvers fit my smallish hands better. It is my understanding that S&W standardized on the RB revolvers because it was easier to make bigger grips in the SB style than it was to produce two different butt styles.

Its all about fit. I like square butts, but have learned to live with round butts on J and K frame guns. Very much prefer a square butt on a L-frame and absolutely detest a round butt N-frame.
But that's just me. :D

I have several pairs of their grips for square butts, but I don't think that they make them anymore.

Still there :)

Yeah, they're all round butt guns now, even the Heritage Models if I recall, though some hide this under Square Butt style stocks.

I have three square butt J frames. A 3" 36-1, a 3" 31-1, and a 2" 36 are so configured. The 3" models handle like miniature K frame service guns. On the 2" the difference is less noticeable.

My 1974 vintage Colt Detective Special also has a square butt. Obviously for a number of years, some folks didn't mind square butts on their concealment guns.

Don't know why they made both. It would seem logical to make them all round. It would be very simple to have two sets of grips panels that would make the grip round or square, as you choose.
