Looking for a recommendation for a shoulder holster for my 2 " model 36. There are times when I would like to carry it this way.

OldSchool Alessi Bodyguard Shoulder Holster is as good as it gets.

I have never owned or even tried on a shoulder rig, so please forgive my ignorance on this topic. Isn't a J Frame a pretty small gun to be carried in this manner? I have a J Frame that I carry AIWB sometimes off-duty, and also as my backup piece in my vest at work. In either of these positions, it carries well enough that I barely notice that it's there.

Is it a question of comfort, concealability issues, sheer preferrence, or something else? It would almost seem that a quality leather shoulder rig for a J Frame would weigh almost as much as the gun itself.

For many a "J" frame is the only carry gun and having several options for concealed carry is a good thing. Many, many years ago I had a Model 36 as my only small personal gun to back up my issued Model 10. I used a Bianchi 9R for my shoulder rig off duty. Sometimes on duty in cooler weather as well.

Today my small gun collection is normally carried in a pocket with a shoulder rig having a bigger pistol or revolver if I feel the need to be heeled with a shoulder holster. It is a wonderful option for driving or getting over a bout of back pain.

When my back acts up I use a Bianchi x-15 small for a Model 36. It takes some getting used to but works and weighs very little. The shoulder holster keeps the weight off my waist. The downside for me is drawing the handgun and crossing my arm with the muzzle. I know keep your finger off the trigger. I have been looking for a medium/small but the ones I've found are more than I want to spend. Ask around, someone may have a holster you want to try.

I hadn't considered the purpose of a holster for driving. Very good idea. I can see how that would be a very handy and fast carry position.

Wapiti22:

Welcome to the Forum.

I am a big fan of both the Bianchi 9r, and the Null shoulder holsters for J-frames. The Bianchi 9r is long out of production, but can be usually found on sale at the on-line auction site that has "bay" in its name (expect to pay anywhere from $50.00 - $80.00 depending on condition). One nice thing about this holster is that the straps come off quickly and easily, and you can then use it as a OWB holster. It is a vertical shoulder holster with the piece hanging upside down, butt facing to the rear. Even with my limited upper body mobility, I can draw it (slowly) with my off hand (left) if need be.

The Ken Null shoulder holsters can be found at the following site:

K.L. Null Holsters Home Page

I have the SMZ model. The advantage of this holster is that it has an open muzzle design - which means it will accommodate any barrel length J-frame revolver. It's very lightweight, and is excellent for use in the summer time (I've worn it on top of a Under Armour type T-shirt with a Aloha type shirt as a cover garment). It will require the use of a cover garment, and one thing to consider is that the draw stroke is proprietary. However, after a little bit of practise, you can make very smooth and fast presentations. Also, at least for me, I cannot draw the piece with my off-hand. I've called Mr. Null's phone number and spoke directly to him (he answers his own phone!). We had a very pleasant conversation, and he is very knowledgeable about holsters and concealed carry.

Best of luck,

Dave

Thanks for all the input - I'll look into some of these suggestions.

Over the years I've tried several different brands and styles and could never get to like them. Sold them all not too long ago and would never buy another. They look "cool" but that's where it ends IMHO.

The best option for a shoulder rig is the Galco executive. Have had mine for years and love it for my short J frames.

Uh, if you ever wanted a 9R for a J frame, better grab it quick. One just went for $162.50 + shipping on one of the auction-sites.

I like the looks of the Galco Executive but Galco is not giving them away.

I found a NOS Bianchi 9R on Backpage from an estate sale for $35.00 for my 649. Wasn't sure I'd like the whole upside down thing but I just love it. Comfortable, easy on and off and very concealable. Can't believe they fell out of favor. I'd definitely pony up more to replace it if something happened to it. As an added bonus the guy threw in an extra holster for the harness that fits a 6 shot 357 snub. I've been thinking about picking up a 2 inch Colt Lawman or Model 64 so I can use it. I guess if I do that it wasn't such a cheap deal after all!

i would strongly recommend Andrews Leather. The guy is the Shoulder Holster Guru IMO. He only takes orders by phone. i just got one for my 1911. Google Andrews Leather. You wont be sorry. check out his YouTube video as well.
