Question Boot Holsters? Anyone Know Anything About Them?

Hello all:

I have worn really nice bespoke-for handmade boots all my adult life. Just started carrying a couple of years ago. Does anyone know of a company that makes an "inside the boots?

Of might there be reasons why I would not want to carry there?

I carry now in my right front pocket a Taurus 738 TCP 380. Works well and I may be sorry if I spend a bunch of money to change. I use the deSantis holster.

Opinions appreciated.

My only experience with a "boot holster" was back in the early 1980's. I wore a "name forgotten" boot holster that clipped inside your boot for use with a Walther PPK/S. Its only real form of retention was having your boot laces snugged tight. I carried it that way for a short time as a back up gun while in uniform. I never felt comfortable running with that set up, and eventually went to lower uniform shoes, and a Velcro ankle holster that worked semi-OK, and was more secure. Neither were comfortable, especially the boot model. I always prefered to pocket carry that Walther whenever I was wearing a jacket though. I would think more modern designs might be better.

I assume OP's boots aren't fancy lace up work boots but rather something along the lines of high end cowboy boots.

Mine wouldn't support the weight of a holstered pistol without dragging the top down around my ankle. Never occurred to me that such a thing was a good idea.

I recall seeing some 'holsters' years ago touted for such a use: they were nylon pouches with a clip gizmo similar to some of the contemporary clip on holsters.

That mechanism seems problematic to me in either application: the likelihood of pulling holster as well as gun is too great.

Yep. The road goes on forever, and the party never ends.

I have tried to find a way to carry in a western boot, haven't found anything acceptable yet. If I wear western boots, I carry in a pocket, or IWB.

I have made a few holsters to go in western boots. There is such a wide range of boot top styles and relative diameters in relation to the size of the wearer's calf/leg that they are truly a one off deal. The general design I came up with for a couple pair of boots I have, which are kind of a ranch type roper design have relatively roomy tops. Not very high tops and not high dollar boots so I used three chicago screws to attach the holster to the inside of the left boot. That design works for the looser tops but I have other boots that have taller, narrower tops that there is simply not room for the holster and gun. If I can get my grand-daughter to help me post a couple of pics, I will try to show you what I mean.
BTW, I have seen some boot tops with a kind of thin scabbard sewn in. Probably by a shoe shop years ago.
As you probably know, ankle or boot carry is a very slow, and awkward way to draw a weapon, but sometimes when it is the only logical choice for some reason or another, it is very comforting to know you are armed, lol.
ETA, I have tried making a couple with clips, but wasn't happy with the results. They always came loose or slid around.

About 40 years ago I worked plainclothes assignments requiring maximum concealment of the firearm(s). Clothing was casual, and I usually wore jeans and western boots. Carried a pair of S&W Model 36 Chief Specials in soft belt clip IWB holsters clipped into the boot tops.

Concealment was excellent. Accessibility was not good at all (kneel or bend over, pull trouser leg up above boot top, draw gun). Comfort was OK for sitting, driving, and casual walking, but running or long distance walking were not good.

Another recollection was the effect of perspiration on blued steel. The revolvers had to be thoroughly wiped down after each day of carry, otherwise surface rust could be expected.

I view this as a carry method that can work in very limited applications, not one suitable for most defensive uses.
