JORDAN COLLECTION UPDATE
Working as a Border Patrolman in 1941, Bill Jordan used the
Askins designed Border Patrol holster shown below on the left.
Look at the trigger guard to tell the difference between the
Askins design and Jordan's design.
Bill wasn't satisfied with the Askins design, so he made some
improvements, that I detailed in a previous thread titled
2 Border Patrol holsters. He had his design made by a German
saddlemaker, C. H. Werner, in Alpine, Texas. He carried it all
through WWII.
Bill returned in 1945. His holster was worn and beat up, so
he stopped at S. D. Myres shop in El Paso and had a new one
made. The Myres Border Patrol is shown below 2nd from left.
Bill was recalled to the Marines for the Korean War. S. D.
Myres died in 1953. Don Hume was discharged from the Navy
and worked in law enforcement in Southern California, making
holsters part time in his garage. Bill gave the exclusive right
to his trademark to Don Hume. One of Don's La Mesa holsters
is 3rd from left.
By 1960 Hume was full time into the holster business. I got
the Jordan Border Patrol holster, with thumb break, from
Hume's Miami, Oklahoma plant 10 or 15 years ago. It is
shown 4th from left.
The 2nd snap on the Myres holster (2nd from left)
is for carry without the safety strap snapped on.
The Hume model snaps on the back of the holster.

That's a very good summary of the facts around these men and these holsters. Well done Phil :-). Looooong ago, Don Hume displayed at one of the big trade shows, either NSGA or SHOT, and had his chap demonstrating how the muzzle plugs are hand-stitched into the holsters. Deadly business, he told of jamming the awl through his thumb on more than one occassion. Lots of force applied to get the awl through the layers at just the right angle, and in production this has to be done quickly, so -- ouch!

The Askins, Myres, and Humes all have the sewn in plugs,
so they all had the sore thumbs.

Previously the best summary I've seen about Hume and Jordan's history together was in Gun Digest's Holsters and Other Gunleather by Roger Combs. Is that your source or do you have more?

The very best source, in my opinion, is right from the horses
mouth, or typewriter in this case. Bill Jordan's column "How The
"Jordan" Border Patrol Holster Came To be". Shooting Times,
January 1984. I have also read Roger Combs article and many
others on this subject.
