Movie holsters

Crazyphil took the time and trouble to contact a friend with knowledge of gun leather & the movie industry. His guess on the Ted De Corsia rig is Andy Anderson as Arvo Ojala & Alphonso didn't do much floral carving. Thanks, Phil, that sounds good to me.
My father took me to a double feature when I was a kid, Last Train to Gun Hill & Gunfight at the OK Corral. The latter movie made a big impression on me & led to a lifelong interest in Wyatt Earp & Doc Holliday. I'll take a close look at Ted's rig next time I watch that movie.

Long time fast draw guy and holster collector Bob Arganbright showed this Ojala double rig from his collection. It shows Ojala's shop did indeed sell fancy carved rigs in the 50s. My friend Jim Martin was great friends with Alfonso and said he carved the rigs for Ojala before opening his own shop and Anderson also worked for Ojala. I found a clip of deCorsia's scene in "..OK Corral" and because the billet on his fancy rig was square where it stitches on, and that his holster hangs straight with no "dip" in front of the hammer, I think he's wearing a fancy Ojala, possibly carved by Alfonso, especially since it was 1957 which I believe is pretty early and well before Alfonso went on his own. But Anderson might have been on his own then, but I bet about a year later.

I'm going to assume Robert Culp's rig is Andy Anderson made since "Hannie Caulder's" is. In Siverado the three main guys with handguns wear Ojala rigs. Costner's has a unique tapered belt system but I'm assuming it's Ojala, too since he was gun coach. When I ordered an Ojala rig in 1985 and badgered him about movie stuff he said his hands were going to be the close up for Costner's fancy work but he got in a car accident in New Mexico and couldn't. Costner did real good. Scott Glen's has the 25 degree angled holster.

Here's some unusual movie rigs, Red. Sammy Davis Jr. with a custom holster vest for two Detective Specials. Glen Ford in "The Fastest Gun Alive" with a Rod Redwing (he was the gun coach) rig. And Chad Everett in "The Last Challenge" with a reverse draw Bohlin rig. In the film it appears to be the Bohlin type holster that had an internal bulge inside the holster that kept the butt sticking out. There's a close up of that feature on line somewhere.

Funny, I never noticed Hannie's holsters.

Yeah. She turns me from a Sheriff’s Model into a Buntline Special. I like that in this movie there seemed to be a conscious effort NOT to have the two main characters carry Colt single actions. And when I say the two main characters I mean Raquel and Culp (I know what you were thinking, Phil).

The Bohlin 'bulge'. It was part of his patent, as was the spring-loaded hammer thong.

Few of us have realised that on at least this model, Bohlin effectively wrapped his welt area around the pistol frame as did Gaylord.

Robert Culp was always a gun guy. He carried a single action S&W in " Trackdown " , the show that retold Texas Ranger exploits. As I recall many of the stars of that era timed their fast draw. Jerry Lewis was first and Sammy Davis was second. There is a clip they did of the Gunsmoke opening where Dillon lost, and everyone cracked up.

As a rule holsters don't get my attention but Scott Bakula's small of the back rig in NCIS - New Orleans drives me nuts. Not because it's wrong but because he removes his gun and locks it up when he is in the office. What police officer ever does that???

YES!!!! Thank you! That has driven me crazy from the beginning. I thought I was the only one!

Raquel's gun is a Tranter, I think, maybe an Adams. Odd choice for a US Western film.

I've seen photos of the gun out of the holster.
