My J Frame is a 642-1. I carry inside waistband (IWB)
occasionally, crossdraw when driving all day, and ankle
holster rarely. Most often I carry outside the waistband
(OWB) at about 4 O'Clock. I like a high-ride pulled in close.
Usually covered with an untucked T shirt.
Here are some of my favorites:

At Left, Black Hills Shark on a Crescent Shark belt, Piranha knife,
Bianchi speed strip, Barsolino hat.

2nd from left, Chic Gaylord speed scabbard on Michaels "Mirage"
belt, Piranha knife, and 3rd RSM cap.

3rd from left, TJ's faux gator on Culver gator belt. The knife is
by Benchmade.

4th from left, Black Hills lizard trim, Culver lizard belt, Piranha
knife again.

5th from left, PWL (Price Western Leather) re-creation of Chic
Gaylord's speed scabbard on Sparks gunbelt. Spec. Ops. knife
by Smith & Wesson.

PS I prefer black (obviously) with silver gun.

On a regular basis I don't carry a J-frame anywhere but in my front pants pocket. Since the fire I had to obtain a new one and my LGS got me a Galco Mod-Pro 158B which is a black, soft material, not leather, and works like a charm. If I go to belt carry I switch to a 2" K-frame. I actually have several belt holsters for J-frames (they were not lost in the fire, just not available to me presently) but I just think it's silly to carry a J-frame where I can so easily carry its big brother.

Hopefully a favourite J frame holster is one with performance that eclipses all the rest even if it is a bit plain-looking. Rather than the other way 'round :-).

Gould & Goodwich leather slide. Fell off ATV twice and J-frame didn’t move. Cheap, simple and lightweight. Easy to reholster.

Model 38 with a Remora pocket holster in my right front pocket has worked for me for years.

I am currently carrying my 2" Model 60 in a Milt Sparks VMII made for my 3" Model 60-15.

I have ordered and am awaiting receipt of a Mika "Waistband" IWB holster for the 2".

I haven't seen reviews of this holster but I already have a Mika Pocket Holster that I'm very pleased with.

S&W revolver in S&W leather...OWB...has always been good for me for years. Model 36, then Model 60, then Model 637 for the + P. Comfortable, "old friend" feel, I know where it is, how it performs (holster qualified at local range) and I am with Red Nichols as posted above...."Favorite?" May not look like much, won't win any BBQ presentations....but I like it, and equally important, I can use it.

I have a Don Hume 001 for pocket carry and an Alessi Talon IWB for belt carry. The talon is a great holster, but hardly gets used as the pocket carry seems to be perfect for me.

Since retirement I only use a Mika pocket holster for my 642. I've considered an OWB pancake but thus far if I'm going to belt carry I holster something larger.

The Ritchie looks to be influenced by Seventrees and/or Ken Null?

I'm Skip Ritchie and in January of 2010, my brother Bob and I opened up Ritchie Leather Co, Inc., makers of fine holsters and belts.

For those of you who don't know us, I'll give you a little background. In 1984 I became a partner in Alessi Custom Concealment Holster, with Lou Alessi and Matt Vassalo. This is when Lou taught me the art of holster making. Honing my skills until one day Lou said to me "Skip, I can't tell if you or I made this holster!".

In the late 80's early 90's we were very busy with government contracts and that's when my brother Bob would come on to help us out.

In the mid 90's the government contracts and business in general slowed down, thanks to the Clinton administration. I left the holster shop to pursue other endeavors while Lou kept the shop open.

In 2009 I heard Lou was sick again, and I went to help him out in my spare time along with two other close friends, Bruce and Rich. In a matter of hours, it was like old times. MaryLou, Louie along with Bruce, Rich and myself, telling stories and laughing about silly things we had done. While Ali listened intently, laughing along with us. This is what rekindled my love of holster making.

My dear friend of thirty five plus years, left the holster shop on February 20th, 2009, for the last time. Lou Alessi passed away the next morning, a legend, never to be forgotten.

Another by Ritchie Leather, not as pretty as the one above but still an awesome holster. They call this model the VSS (vertical speed scabbard). I use it often with either an older model 60 or a modern 642. Can't beat it IMO.

Best Pocket Holster Ever!

Here are a couple of rare ones. Rare because they are 30+ years old and the maker no longer makes holsters for revolvers. Only wish I had bought a few more of them when I could have. Anyone else own some of these from across the pond???

I'm pretty boring as my go to J frame holsters these days are pocket holsters. Bob Mika makes a nice one, as does Gene Desantis. Neither are beautiful in the classic sense, but they work and they don't break the bank either.

Ken Null of Resaca, Georgia makes a very nice holster. I also like the holsters made by Bell Charter Oak very much.

This is a Kramer Belt Scabbard, Belt and Cartridge Holder made from Horsehide Leather. It's about 12 - 13 years old or so and gets used at least a few times a week. All I ever do to it is once a year I polish it with Kiwi Shoe polish. Still retains perfectly, still looks terrific and is the best Rig I've ever had for any gun.

I have always preferred simple when it comes to holsters and carry guns. No snaps, no velcro, no screws, no straps, no gimmicks - just a perfectly designed and manufactured holster that does everything one could possible ask of a holster without all the negatives.

Here’s two of mine although I’ve only actually used a Mika pocket holster in recent memory. The carved Evaluators Ltd. Berns-Martin belonged to Flora Van Orden. I ordered the black Lightnin’ Triple Draw holster when I was 16, I used to wear it on my belt pretty regularly when I was a lot younger.

I have tried several holsters for my Model 640 Pro Series and my favorite by far is the Galco V-Hawk IWB holster. It comes with the usual snap loops but I replaced them with the optional tuckable metal clips and they work well for me. Great holster.

I have several pretty IWB & OWB holsters that I use occasionally. But my favorite and easiest (but not sexiest) carry holster is my cotton Kangaroo Holster. I can carry my J frame or my Shield comfortably.

I have a few interesting and some quite old J-frame holsters that I believe I saved from the fire but, presently, they are stored away and inaccessible to me. For quite some weeks the only gun accessible to me was my High Standard .22WMR derringer but I couldn't stand it any more so I got my buddy who has ALL of my guns to dig out my M649 and custom M64 snub. I was delighted. However, my holsters that we saved are stored elsewhere so I called my LGS and asked them to get me a J-frame pocket holster. "Leather or Kydex?" "Don't care" So what you see here is my current favorite J-frame holster and it's a good'un, too!

After 19,000 hours on my belt and 3000+ rounds downrange, this combo is starting to feel comfortable.

442 in Nemesis in right front pocket.

A classic S&W Model 03 shoulder holster with a Model 40 makes a comfortable rig while driving. It won't get trapped between the seatbelt and the console.

I got this old DeSantis IWB from a fellow forum member, don’t remember who. I think I paid $15 plus shipping for it. It turned out to be very comfortable and has good retention. Works great with my 342Ti. The snaps were worn out, so I just superglued them shut and have to thread my belt through the flap, but other than that, some of the best money I’ve spent.

Thanks for that C&L. I haven't been acquainted with Ritchie,
but like his work. It shows the Alessi influence. Both Alessi
and Ken Null were influenced by Paris Theodore aka Seventrees.

Mika pocket holster for my Model 38. Works well in the front pocket, side pocket and rear pocket. Think I'm going to spring for one of the new IWB models. Waybackwhen I was relief bailiff, I used an older black Hunter belt holster with screw tension. Of course concealed by my navy blue blazer.

I've got a HighNoon OWB holster for my old model 60 that I love. Problem is I just recently "modernized" my carry gun to a 442. Because it has an internal hammer, I can't use this Highnoon holster with the 442. I didn't know how difficult it would be finding an OWB thumb break holster for an internal hammer J frame. I usually carry the 442 in pocket, in a Blackhawk pocket holster. The Blackhawk is cheap as could be but I like it because it is small and thin while being padded and soft at the same time. It also works well with my LCP.
I do at times carry a J frame OWB so yesterday I ordered a Desantis thumb break pancake holster for the 442. Can't wait for it to get here so I can start breaking it in.

Mike, I just ordered a Desantis thumb break, haven't gotten it yet. How does it fit with the CTC grip?

In this rig the CTC is a non-issue. The gun sits so that the bulge of the laser just barely touches the top of the strap.

You can see the stretch marks in the retention strap. This one required some break in. This strap is good for the 340 style, wouldn't be so good for the humpbacks.

Finding a strap holster for the hammerless J frame was pretty frustrating. Apparently, there's a not a big market for them. When I was shopping I had to send a couple of other brands back; some adds claim they work with hammerless J's and they simply don't. Doesn't seem to it requires a huge engineering feat....just a different angle to the strap.
