Default Who Here Carries An “Old School” Gun?

I have many firearms including some state of the art, modern semi auto guns. But I gravitate towards carrying what many call old school guns. My favorite and most often carried guns are my S&W Model 15 2 inch snub and a vintage Charter Arms Police Bulldog .38. Who else carries “old school” stuff on a daily basis? Here are my two….

I believe since double-action revolvers as we know them today, in both Colt and S&W brands, have been around since prior to 1900 that anyone who carries a double-action revolver of either of these brands or similar (Rossi, etc.) can be considered as carrying an "Old School" gun.

Revolvers were state-of-the-art when I was born and still were when I started shooting. So far as I am concerned they are still to be preferred over anyone's "plastic fantastic", I still trust the technology more that that of striker-fired guns. I own numerous semi-automatic pistols from several manufacturers ranging from .32 A.C.P. to .45 A.C.P., and all but one is hammer-fired. The exception is a .380 "Browning Pocket", and I don't carry it. (because it is near 100% condition). I have carried many of them at different times.

I do not have a "carry rotation" like some folks enjoy but I do have two distinct primary carry guns. My EDC is quite modern. However I have an alternate primary that I carry specifically when I know I am forced to leave it behind. That means a concert, sporting event, any school function, etc.

And you could make the argument that it fits your topic here. It's a S&W 469, the first S&W "minigun", a small pistol that was factory made by a big-name gun maker early in an era where the only small semiautomatic pistols in a capable caliber were altered larger guns by custom outfits.

The S&W 469 probably bit hard in to the sales or perhaps for many, the desire for guns like the ASP and Devel Custom guns. For the first time, you could get a concealable QUALITY pistol in a substantial caliber.

My example is old enough that it is A-prefix and predates the triple-alpha serial prefix guns. It was made in 1982. The evolution of the 469 was the 6904. It's a 12+1 double stack, double action pistol with an alloy frame and a spurless hammer.

It's a pretty good gun and it's also more accurate than I think it oughta be for a smallish pistol. I paid chicken feed for it from Gunbroker but to be fair, that was almost a decade ago. I chose this specifically to -BE- the low-cost gun that could get stolen because it is forced to be left behind, and it certainly fit that role at the price I paid for it. Trouble is hahaha, I can no longer replace it for chump change.

Always a 4” revolver, always a 45 ACP revolver, most of the times fixed sights. About as old school as it gets unless I grab a single action.

Usually this one,

Sometimes one of these,

The newest addition,

Longer or shorter barrels do not conceal as well on me.

My EDC is either S&W Model 19 with 2 1/2” barrel or S&W M&P with 2” barrel shipped in 1948. I shoot both in PPC concealed carry matches and always pleased how well you can shoot them at 25 yards.

Is every revolver old school? One wonders......

M649 - in my pocket virtually every day

High Standard .22 Magnum derringer - so, as part of Every Day Carry, is this old school enough? Because I carry it every day - in the pocket of my robe!

Custom M64 002 with 2" Model 12 "Airweight" barrel replacing the original 4" barrel - EDC? On rare occasion outside but it's ready to go inside the house Every Day.

I guess those are sufficient..............

A Smith & Wesson J-frame has been with me almost every day of my Adult life starting back in 1980

These used to be mu BUG, but these days they are my primary personal defense firearm

Whenever I feel the need for more than 5 shots, I carry a NY Reload

Colt Government Model Series 70 in .45ACP

Swapped an AK for it in, of all places, AK, back in '85 up in Fairbanks. Been my primary carry piece ever since. Had an Honor Legion buddy of mine who used to swear "Big lead knocks them dead". He would know.

Wife has instructions that when I die, it gets buried with me in Condition 2 with 2 spare mags, a Randal #16 and a 12 pack of Cherry Coke.

"The man who would go unarmed in Paradise had better be damn sure of where he is"

Best,

I had a buddy who used to carry one of those High Standards in .22 Mag as his retirement piece. I used to bust his blls about it.

One day he comes in my office, takes off his jacket and he's got a worn flat-latch Chiefs Special on his belt with two speedloaders.

"Hey Frankie, whats with the artillery?"

"Robbie, I went into a bodega to get a deck of smokes and three <1950's ethnic slur> were robbing the place."

" No sht! what'd you do?"

"Drew my piece, backed out and called it in from a payphone."

Guess he never figured he'd run up against more than two guys.

Frankie came on 'da Job when he got back from Korea, did his 20, drove a bus for another 20 and then pulled the pin. He was a good guy and had great stories of the 1960's riots.

Him and I were going out to the range one day to try out some cast bullet loads for a Krag (him and I were big cast bullet guys) and he plopped himself in his easy chair in the living room of his house waiting for me, closed his eyes and went to the Eternal Foot Post. He was a good guy.

Best,
RM Vivas

I carry dishwasher-safe during the week, due to how I dress, mostly. When I'm not working, it's a Smith revolver, 1911, or BHP of some type.
If I'm lucky enough to ever retire, I think the plastic will be relegated to special circumstances.

I guess I can also be considered "old school" as all of my handguns - save for one - are S&W J- and K-frame revolvers and, if I'm dressed, I'm carrying one.

(The exception being a 1999-vintage Kimber Ultra Carry Series I which is mostly relegated to winter carry or when traveling outside of my usual haunts.)

I will admit to being tempted by the P365 though.......

Old school? I'm at the age that the 1970's vintage S&W's were brand new. I've carried numerous model 19's and 66's with 2 1/2" and 4" barrels and a few model 57's with 4". Now and again I dabbled with a Browning Hi-Power when I felt like being under gunned. I have no affinity for tactical Tupperware. These days I carry a pinned and recessed model 57 4' or a similar 19 in a Kramer strait speed scabbard worn cross draw either under a vest or a loose shirt. My preference for self defense is a 12 gauge with oo.

I carry a 20+ year old 642. I have several newer autos but my 642 is just as reliable as it gets. Plus, It's just so easy to carry.

My Glock 26 is over 30 years old. I have also carried a 1944 Beretta model 1935 .32 acp, but not much. It's solid steel and weighs more than the 10 shot 9mm G26

Yes I carry old school revolvers without any unnecessary extra holes in them and if I feel the need for greater avaliable rounds I carry a Semi auto with origins in 1935.

This 681 is one that frequently carry.

Model 681-img_0270-2-jpg

A rugged, very robust handgun, it has proven itself to me.

All I have any more are "old school stuff"; P&R S&W magnums, 1911's, a BHP, a Colt Model M and a SAA clone. My two usual carry pieces are a Commander-sized 1911 in .40S&W and a M66-1 snubbie.

Damn, ain't that purty ! I bet it didn't look like that back in 1908, that's some nice upgrades. Are you saying it is a 1908 (.380) or an early 1903 (.32)? I've got a wartime (WWII) made 1903 but it doesn't get carried for several reasons.

It was made in 1908. It was originally a .32, but got converted to .380 after that. I have a few of these, and each has received a little love from Novak's. One is a full custom, and I love it dearly, but this one shoots best, so it gets toted when I am dressed up.
The Pocket Hammerless, or 1903, or 1908, or Type M, or whatever name one wants to use, was WAAAY ahead of its time. Mine have a tiny bead welded onto the safety to make it possible to manipulate with my stupid hands.
Interestingly, they all run and run and run with any load around. And are exceptionally accurate.
The only drawback is magazines. Only Triple K makes a mag now, so I have scoured the earth and found a dozen original Colt mags. These ain't cheap!

US Armament Co. near me in Ephrata, PA. has been making 1903 and 1908 model Hammerless pistols authorized by Colt for about 7-10 years. Their pistols are durable and reliable and very cosmetically appealing renditions of this venerable design. They also make .32 and .380 magazines for these pistols that work great. Many owners of the original pistols have bought magazines and pistols from them. I don't carry my 1937 .380 or my 1944 mint S.O.E. .32 Hammerless pistols, but there are many endorsements from owners from fellow members on the Colt Forum.

You might want to check out this
company for a good alternative for cheaper and reliable magazines for your custom Hammerless' pistols.

Good luck!

I carry a bobbed hammer model 60 that was shipped when I was 3 years old. If that counts.

I really like how it goes so nicely in a pocket holster and carries easily, while still being an excellent shooter (with some forearm/trigger strength training and practice + Craig Spegel's grips).

I don't feel particularly unsafe here in northwest Montana. I can't go anywhere without seeing a few people open carrying, and I'm sure a third of the guys here are concealing. Plus the local PD and Sherriff's Dept guys actually care about guns and being good with them.

Funny thing is that I go... the opposite of old school when I am in the woods. I carry an HK loaded with Buffalo Bore .45 Super Outdoorsman. I figure I won't be especially....cool headed...if I'm in trouble with a cat or bear, and having a lot of extremely punchy hard cast rounds at my disposal is preferable to fewer, if more powerful, .44 mags.

Define Old school I usually carry a revolver, but now days I carry one with a Scandium alloy frame. New old school?

Only semi autos I have are on 1911 frames, but again alloy frames. The 45 is commander length, one is a 9mm 3.5" and another a longer 9mm/22TCM

In a world dominated by polymer receiver pistols, I guess I carry old school. Normal carry is a S&W 6946, when I need something smaller, a S&W 640-1. Both are from the 1990's and the 640-1 is actually an early production example, bought the first one I found shortly after S&W announced them.

While the gun itself isn’t necessarily “old school,” my 2008-09 mfg 442 Airweight gets carried on the hottest days of the summer sometimes.

Normally I carry an M38 or M49 but once I get a holster for it I’ll add a Star PD to my carry rotation.

My two for EDC:

An all steel 640-1 and a hard chromed 1958 Colt DS:

Below, in their Mitch Rosen leather:

Herrett's Jordan Troopers on both. Interestingly, to me anyway, I have no explanation for the size differential. The one for the 640-1 was ordered 15 or so years ago and the one for the DS perhaps 18 months ago. Both are comfortable. The smaller conceals more easily for pocket carry, for sure, but the larger feels great, very stable, in my hands and is fine for OWB with a cover garment.

A Charter Arms Undercover SS .38 in my pocket at work every day, since we work down the road from a sketchy urban area, and have had "trespassers" causing some trouble before. On weekends I usually have a M&P Shield 9 inside my waist at the back hip.

I mostly carry fairly new guns a 638-5 and a 60Pro in .357magnum. Light weight, easy to replace if they become evidence. If I want to show off a little I’ll carry a 66-1 or 19. If clothing permits something larger in a shoulder holster a 1911 might come along.

I carry a Mod. 38 38 spl. It has a brushed nickel finish. Carried until the finish has gotten ugly. In the cooler days in Texas I carry my Colt 1908. On Sunday I carry a Shield.1908 is a sweet one. Friend offered me another 1908. I jumped on it. Marked NYPD! Downside it has been reblued. Will carry on occasion after the weather cools.

SAFireman,

Love those Wolf and Klarr grips!

First gun shop I worked at had a set on a old M&P. I said to the shop owner (now deceased) “Do you know what those are?” As he slyly smiled and said “Yep!”

My daily carry is, and has been since the 80''s, this much-used and beat up M49. It served me well for years as a backup and off-duty piece. Now in retirement, I still carry it daily and see no reason to change.

I have literally put 10's of thousands of rounds through it, mostly 146 WC's from an old Cramer mold. The only part to ever break was a torsion spring; easy to replace. It looks like ****, but still locks up tight as a drum.

Yeah, I'm "Old School" and prefer it that way.
