My back neighbor has an annoying cocker spaniel that barks his fool head off when in the back yard. I've seen ads for these high frequency devices that mounted on a pole near the dog send out an inaudible signal when the dog barks. Its supposed to be uncomfortable to the dogs ears. Anyone knoeWif these things work? Or are they just BS.

Not sure about that item that you mentioned, but I have heard that they work.
I know for a fact that a barking dog collar will work. When the dog barks, he gets shocked. You can adjust the sensitivity of the collar. After a little while, you do not even need the collar.
Of course, you would have to talk your neighbor into it.
I cannot figure why some people get a dog (or several) and then chain it to a dog house outside, or in a pen, and just ignore it's barking. It appears that they can cope with it, and some are just really annoying.

Similar device available in Aus, but instead of a shock, it spays out a small amount of citronella oil.
a) "surprises" the dog and distracts him from barking
b) apparently dogs don't like the smell, so it puts them off barking.

Same concept as the shock collar, but depending on the neighbor, might a bit easier to convince them...

Please make sure your neighbor knows the dog is barking - we lost a dog due to "separation anxiety" dog was barking and howling all the time we weren't home - no one had told us so we didn't know there was a problem. She ended up breaking out and sadly didn't make it back home)

Pick up one of the "silent dog whistles". They are cheap. Try it and see if it has any effect. If it does, get the electronic device.

Call Animal Control. Excessive barking can get your neighbor a pretty healthy fine. They might even have to explain it to a judge. Its their problem, make them deal with it.
I know most of our local Animal Control officers. They understand that sometimes dogs just get noisey. So they'll give the owner a fair chance to get things under control. Along about the third time out for the same complaint they get out of the truck with the ticket book in their hand and a bad attitude. Especially if you call them out in the middle of the night.

The high frequency sound devices do make dogs upset. I bought a handheld model about 20 years ago. You (or I could) actually hear it, and it emmited a squeal if you were close. I bought it because the neighbors dog would get thrown out each night and he would bark. I have no idea why the owners are the only ones who can't hear the constant barking. Hours on end.

What you've got to understand is the devices do irritate the dog. But then he's already upset, these just make it worse. If he's not barking and you press the trigger, he'll start. Like so many things, it can be used for good or bad. If you don't like your neighbor, and his dog is inside, you can get him yapping just by pressing and holding the trigger! But then he tosses the dog out the door and you get the noise.

We tried it on our young dalmatian when he started to bark. It made him bark more. I'm thinking its a loser.

The best anti-bark devices are usually .30 caliber. One of our lurkers here, my buddy Joe, says he used to listen for a while, then he'd go outside and let loose with a few rounds. Generally in the direction the noise was coming from. He lives kind of out in the country. If the gunshots didn't shut the mutt up, the neighbors who could ignore the barking would get the idea and shut the dog up. Well, that or they were worried about the lead hitting their house.

Since we have a very intolerant demanding PITA neighbor(don't get me started), who complains about everything....... Including 2 neighbors kids

We have tried the ultrasonic(doesn't work), citronella(the dog love it) and finally the Sport Dog rechargeable NoBark 10R. The Sport Dog works the best. It has 3 different settings which are user adjustable.

OK, unless you can make it "fun" for the dog, putting it on can be a problem when they figure things out. Believe me, they can and will figure it out. You have to be a step ahead. I give them a treat and lots of praise when I put their collars(3 dogs) on. So our dogs are OK with the collars(so far)......

I would agree with RBURG - try water from a spray water bottle if the dog is close enough - if not able to hit him with a stream of water, I would go speak with the owner and let him know this is not going to continue...

suppressed 22 works real well for a lot of problems, including animal control.

Call said neighbor at about 3 am and bark into the phone until he is fully awake. Repeat as necessary.
