That looks like my Great Grandfathers 1897 16 GA. I have it now ser# 868***. It still shoots but I'm afraid to break it so it is now a looks only gun.

There's a difference I'msure someone knows but I've forgotten.We had a nane for some similar stuff when I was in the service but all I can remember is it started with:Self adhesive ................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Never get tired of seeing the gun.. 
I haven't heard it called ( or seen) friction tape in years....
great for Stickball Bats... Louie-ville Sluggers..and other things used for getting a "Hit" 
Ever since Braxton put me in the witness protection.. uhhhhhhhh never mind

Friction tape was a roll of cloth strip soaked in a black sort of adhesive. It was ****. Didn't stick well and was slightly oily. Elect tape blew it out of the water. Haven't seen any in years.

Friction tape is still produced and available today, though I'm not sure what the application might be. As Dave D stated; I always thought it to be a pretty ****** product. I've still got a roll in one of my fathers old toolboxes. Sits right next to a "Yankee" drill and other assorted hand tools from the 50's.

There's electrical tape, friction tape...and then there is skateboard tape. 
I like the skateboard tape myself...nearly the same stuff as anti-slip stripping, but a bit more finely grained/stippled.
Although, it wouldn't be period on that old Colt next to the Marlin shotgun...
Is that an 1898 or a model 17?
Looks like an 1898 going by the takedown mechanism.

Friction tape is what was used on all those single barrel shotguns that had a split stock at the wrist. Also on all those single barrel shotguns that didn't have a split stock at the wrist but that Grandpa thought might at some time in the future and got reinforced with a half roll of friction tape. The rest of the roll was wrapped around the handle of a ball peen hammer that had the wood all beat up just under the head, it stopped the wood from getting beat up.
Friction tape was the duct tape of the 1800's, I think. Wouldn't stretch like electrical tape, took several years to dry out and quit leaving gum all over your hand, left marks that took several more years to wear off.
Didn't know you could still buy it, haven't seen it in a hardware store in years.

I don't think that is a Mod 1897 Winchester. Is it a 1893 or possibly a Marlin?

Old dirt biker once told me this trick about keeping handgrips attached to your motorcycle handlebars....
Wrap the handlebar (and the throttle tube for the right side) where the handgrip goes with a layer of friction tape. Soak the friction tape with gasoline. The grip will slide on easily, but after everything dries, try getting it off then.
I used to do this back in the 70's, but lately I've just been buying a small tube of the special glue they make for this purpose....
Oh yeah...I thought it was teflon tape that wouldn't take a finger-print?

Growing up in the '50's I remember helping my Dad rewire the 1920 vintage house we lived in. It had knob and tube wiring with fabric insulated wiring like on old appliances. We ran lots of BX metal armored cable, cutting the tough wound steel casing with a hack saw and covering the wire connections with lots of friction tape. Friction tape was also used to repair hammer handles and garden tools, I used it on my baseball bat handles until Mom brought home some surgical tape which did not make such a sticky black mess of your hands. I remember walking to the hardware store down the street from home to purchase frictioin tape, Bulldog Brand was the brand Dad always had me get.

Yep, thats the stuff. I haven't seen any in the last 30 yrs or so either. I think skateboard tape is the modern version. It for sure works better.
