Default Who has a hip replacement?

Anybody here got a hip replacement? I'm going in for one on January 5th. Hoping I don't need more than four weeks off work. Been putting this off for six years...tell me about yours!

Merry Christmas!

My dad had both of his replaced within 2months of each other,it has been about two years now.As i can remember he was pretty much healed from the first one after a month. He has rheumatoid arthritis and it has been damaging his joints for years, but now he gets around and feels a lot better no more constant pain from his hips. I hope your surgery goes well. Good luck and God bless.

Both
Best thing I ever did.

I was in a wheelchair until mine were replaced
Now, I walk without any assistance (no cane etc,)

I am my second set.
They were originally replaced in 1977
(When I was 17)

Lasted until 2001
(24 years)

I potentially won't be due for my third set
until the age most people have their first replacement

Don't worry you will be up & around in no time
and you will be glad you finally had the replacement done

I had both hips replaced at the same time in '07, surgery was complete in 1 1/2 hrs.. I stood on my new hips 4 hrs after surgery, was climbing steps before I left the hospital three days later. My rehabilitation took three months, I was fully recovered at the one year mark and continued to regain flexibility during the second year. No one need fear modern orthopedic surgery, the pain is very well controlled. Oral meds were all that was necessary when in the hospital and I did not use all the meds I was sent home from the hospital with. My discomfrot never exceeded 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Have the surgery sooner rather than later, you'll be glad you did the pain and misery will be a thing of the past the moment you awake from surgery.

I did the same thing with the knees. Best thing I ever did. I would have had to take a disability retirement if I hadn't had the surgery done. It gave me a few more years to work and increase my retirement and SS.

My wife had one done and less than a year later she'd almost forgotten she'd had it done. Just be careful the first couple of months: they're very easy to dislocate during that time.

Holy ****, Smitty! Hip replacement at 17???? I'm guessing either you were in a car accident or had hip problems since you were born?

I think mine are worn out from racing dirt bikes and skiing...and hard work, of course...

Had my right hip replaced in late Sept., I experienced very little pain, was on a walker one week, a cane one week, drove myself to the ocean and went surf fishing on the third week, and was released by my surg. on the forth week. It has been eleven weeks since my surg and I can't even remember it. I am fully back to normal and feeling great. Good luck and Merry Christmas.

I'm on number three, both have been replaced and one twice. the last one took me almost a year to get over, Had to walk on sticks for four months with no weight on leg. Metal goes down almost to my knee, bone was took from leg and split to remove the old glue and fit the new insert. Then it was banded and put back inplace. Everyone is different, I worked with the one lose for three months before going thur the above. Make sure you have a good Doctor.

I'm 49 and started having what I thought was arthritis pains in my right hip around 8 months ago, got worse and worse. Went to Doc in early Nov. and was told my hip joint was deteriorated to the point it had to be replaced. Doc said it was up to me when, "How much pain can you take?" was the determining factor as to when.
I'm looking at one the first quarter of '10, so this is a good thread for me to learn from, thanks for posting.

I saw them doing one on the on the satellite on the learning channel and it was kind of scary looking they drilled the leg bone and drove the ball joint in it, I'm taking glucosamine & chondroitin every day to try to keep away from anything like a joint replacement. I have friends who have had very sucessful ones though. Jeff

Hey RD,

I was in your exact situation six years ago. My orthopaedic surgeon said then he'd do it whenever I was ready. I waited six years. Doc said I must have "a high tolerance for pain"...no, I'm just a procrastinator...should have done it years ago.

The surgeon I've got is pretty well-known and has a great reputation. He's already worked on my knee. Did great on that. One of his partners (large orthopaedic surgical group) needed a hip replacement and he had my guy do it.

I have confidence in him.

This seems to be alot more popular than I would have thought. My right hip is in pretty bad shape, but I'm told there's other options we can do before a full blown replacement. I expect to have some sort of surgery next year for it, and if that goes well it may be quite a while before the thought of replacement pops back up. I'm sure it's in my future sometime though.

I had a sudden flare up in October and have been hobbling around since. Thanks to Celebrex and some personal therapy I'm back to about 80%. Hopefully I'll even improve a little more.

Hearing how common this is and how good the results are makes me feel a little better. Thanks folks!

I have a brother who had hip replacement done after a very bad auto accident. It was a year ago, and he is just really recovring. He's been miserable. But he had a badly broken pelvis.

An actor who I used to know slightly had it done, and said the results were terrific! If you ever saw the First Season of, "The Lost World" the guy who played Dr. Summerlee wasn't faking that limp! He's Canadian, and their health program may have helped with bills. Didn't ask.

He was dropped from the cast after that season, and I've always wondered if his health was a factor. I think they just cited a need to cut back on salaries, as that was an expensive show to make. But, who knows?

He did tell me that surgery changed his whole life for the better. And that modern techniques have much enhanced the work.
