My wife bought me a DVD of the movie, mainly for the special features which you don't get to see on TV.
There are interviews and features with all the kids as grown ups and a commentary track with Peter Billingsley and Bob Clark, the director.
I never knew until today that SCOTT Farcus (the bully) is actually SCUT Farcus.
The only one of the kids not interviewed as an adult is Randy, Ralphies little brother. That kid had a great laugh.

Merry Christmas Everyone! :)

Interesting, as Randy was on Fox & Friends I think a Christmas or two ago to talk about the movie. Figured he'd be on the DVD as well.

That is my youngest daughter's favorite movie. We finally picked up the DVD and she has already watched it three or four times. I can only remember seeing it on TV and first time I saw the uncut movie I was laughing hard. They really cut it up to fit it in the time slot and put it on air.

Gene Shepherd's boyhood home is about a half mile from me. The story is based on his life here, though filmed in Cleveland. It was made in '83. A sequel called "The Star-Crossed Romance of Josephine Cosnowski" was made later that year. It follows the family with Ralphie as a teenager. He's smitten by a young Polish girl, and the movie is about his attempts to win her. ALL the actors in the sequel are different, and the movie is funny, but nothing like "Story". The movie's only an hour long and I caught it strictly by accident on PBS years ago. I bought a copy of a copy of copy DVD of it on ebay last year.

Thanks for the info everyone! It's my favorite also. Just watched it last night. I've wanted to get the DVD, and after reading how much was cut out for TV, I believe I'll pick up a copy!

That is one of my all-time favorites, too. Darren McGavin was a howler as "my old man." Someone has turned the original house where they filmed "A Christmas Story" into a museum. You can buy the leg lamp too. My brother has one.

I've never heard of the "Star Crossed Romance." It looks like I should look into some of Jean Shepherd's writings, too.

If you don't like that movie you probably don't like apple pie and the Star Spangled Banner. I saw it while in hospital in Chicago results of pretty bad injuries, and damn near split my stitches open laughing...Sure cheered me up!

Merry Christmas.
A great movie. Watched it every year since it came out.
As a youngster I went though the same static wanting a "Red Ryder"
BB gun. The "You'll shoot your eye out" was true. Several boys I grew up with did that. Those copper coated BBs could bound back right at the shooter.

Misty,
From what I've seen there is very little, if any that's been cut out of the TBS showing.
Be sure to drink your Ovaltine!

Shepherd wrote some great stuff for PLayboy. I remember one about going to the Indy 500 with his dad and uncle. The entire trip hinged on how many spare tires and bottles of Atlas Praeger beer they could take. He also wrote a great story about being in the Army and they had just drafted several chefs. He said everyone was complaining about the food being too good and too much of it.

A great movie. Jean Shepherd was a friend of mine I used to talk to him several times a week on Ham Radio his call was K2ORS.

my all time favariot christmas movie....i must admit i have it on vhs as well as dvd....its running on tv here now for 24 hrs.straight

There's two or three versions out on DVD. If you want the special features be sure check the contents. Mine is the two disk set.

I remember a story of his in Playboy about his high school prom, "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories", I believe it was titled.

Give me immortality, or give me death!!

After years of hearing about the movie in passing, I think last year was the first time I watched it. Girlfriend is a huge fan, got the dvd, the book, etc.

Total letdown. Sorry. Don't get the point.
Other than the scene at the Chinese restaurant, I didn't find much entertainment in the movie, and I love the national anthem by the way. Hate apple pie, though.

My wife actually bought me a leg lamp ornament for the tree this year. And I think we're going to go eat Chinese tonight.:p
