Default Anybody still use Hoppes #9?

I see advertised a lot of different gun cleaning supplies and I must admit I don't know a thing about them. I was taught to clean a gun when I was just a little kid, and the only thing Dad and Grandpa used was Hoppes #9. Always seemed to work good for me. Just the smell immediately brings back a flood of pleasant memories. I've often thought they missed a tremendous marketing opportunity by never offering a Hoppes # 9 cologne. Hey, the women have Chanel # 5! Now watch, we'll see on the news they're gonna do it. You're all my witnesses, it was my idea, I want royalties. (And the first case).

I still have some of it, but when I got some Hoppe's Elite for Christmas a couple of years ago I've used nothing else.

I use it. Have a big old (quart maybe) bottle that I bought in the mid-70s. I laid off shooting for years, and when I started back a few years ago, the #9 was still good.
You are right about the smell - nothing else smells like that.

I use it on all my guns, even the nickel ones (I just don't soak them in it), have for the past 30 years. Like others, I like the smell.

I still use #9 because it's not as aggressive as some other solvents. So there is no worry about bore damage if I want to let it soak for a while.

Still use it for bores and chambers. Use Break-Free for the rest of the gun.

Been using it for over 45 years on all my guns and I still have several rifles, revolvers and shotguns that are in great shape. Don't see any reason to change now.

I use a common part cleaner tank from Harbor Freight to dunk handguns and large parts for cleaning. It uses common service station solvent. I didn't like the solvent smell so added a quart of Hoppe's No. 9. The smell is now great and the cleaning action is improved. A win win situation! ..... Big Cholla

Just finished up using the last few drops out of a quart bottle of Hoppe's #9 that I bought last year. Cleaned a 34, 36, 37, 5 Screw M & P, 60-14LS, 39-2, 1066, 3953, 4053, two 59's, Marlin Camp 9, Win 94, Browning X-Bolt, PolyTech Legend, Winchester M1 Carb, Russian SKS, Kimber Custom Compact Aluminum, PolyTech M14S, High Standard 410 Flight King, Benelli 12 ga SBE 2 and a Remington 20 ga 1100 Special Field. Fun was had by all, while at the range. But no one wanted to share in the fun of cleaning up after the fun was had by all.

Hoppe's #9 to clean, CLP to lube. Next purchase will be a quart of Hoppe's Elite. The only bad thing about Hoppe's Elite is that it is odorless. I get "FIRED UP" at the scent of Hoppe's #9. I guess I'm going to have to learn to get "FIRED UP" with Hoppe's Elite odorless formula.

Got a bottle of it for Christmas...best cologne I've ever used. I'll have to try it for cleaning firearms. Seems most posters here think it's good for that too.

Yes, I love the smell and still use it. As a matter of fact, I use a 50/50 mix of Hoppes and Kroil to loosen leading before running Chore Boy down the tube. Works great!

I hope that helps,

Frank

i still use it but mainly just on .22 rimfires these days. There are better solvents for removing copper fouling or heavy plastic fouling from shotgun wads but when it's just a matter of running a few wet patches down a bore followed up by dry and then a little Break-Free for a preservative, good ol' No. 9 still does the trick. I especially like it with Bore Snakes on .22 pistols that I don't like to disassemble like a Ruger or Colt Woodsman. A cotton swab dipped in No. 9 to clean the breach face and chamber/extractor cut area and you're usually good. Plus like others, the smell brings back great memories.

I use Hoppes #9 and a bunch of other gun cleaning solvents as well. I think it's still a great product and it's relativly cheap and works for most of my gun cleaning chores.

I've found that Gunslick foaming bore cleaner works better after shooting moly coated black bullets tho...

I'll use whatever happens to be handy. Hoppes, Break Free, WD-40 (GASP), doesn't matter much.

As for the smell? It smells like Hoppes No 9. Nothing special about it to me. It's not good. It's not bad. It's just Hoppes.

Use #9 after every use, love the smell too. Not sure about the cologne thing, my wife sends me outside. Now that I think about it, it might sell.

Yep I've been using it for many years on the bore and chambers. It always seems to do the job and I also like the smell. I bought a large bottle at a GI Joes that was going out of business over the summer. I probably have enough for another 20 years or so.

I still use it for handguns and shotguns. For rifles, I use various combinations of Butch's, Sweets, Kroil and Marvel Mystery oil.

I like the idea of a No. 9 cologne! I enjoy cleaning my guns and part of that is the smell of Hoppes No. 9. I've tried other stuff and it all seemed to work OK, but nothing else smells quite like "guns" to me.

Love it. I also like the smell, but it drives my wife nuts! She knows when I've been cleaning guns and often comments on the obnoxious smell...but I like the way it smells. B

Maybe Hoppe's Love Potion #9 from the song. Yes, I still use it.

i always start with #9 to remove the bulk of powder residue before i go to a more aggressive cleaner. truth of the matter is, nothing completely cleans the bore that i am aware of.

I use it too, mostly on blued surfaces and in bores. I start with Hoppe's #9 and only go to more aggressive or specialized products when needed. I usually buy it by the quart.

I remember a test on cleaners by Cameron Hopkins in American Handgunner some years ago which matched my own experiences. IIRC he said nothing worked any better than another, but what was common to all was that they required lots of elbow grease.

For me, THE test for a cleaner was whether it removed leading and burn marks from stainless steel revolvers and the only product which worked was a lead remover cloth - think Birchwood Casey made it, but can't quite remember.

Can't stand it. I've used nothing but Shooter's Choice powder solvent and Clenzoil for at least ten years.

Default No. 9 Rules

Sure - just a couple dabs on the shooting bag before going to the range. Gets me in the mood. [Kidding...] And then the clean-up after. [Not kidding...] Nice. And brings back memories of shooting with my dad.

CLP is my standard, tho, for final wipe-down.

We are lucky to have such a rich hobby!

Yep. Good stuff! Classic, traditional Smith & Wesson revolvers and Hoppe's No. 9. Nothing better!

Actually brought some over with me for my own use. I've been using it on the bore of my .50 cal barrel. At home though, I generally use shooter's choice. As an aside, THE best lubricant for the Ma Duece, especially in this dusty land, is transmission fluid. CLP seems to me to gum up a lot worse on a crew serve that spends it's time on top of a humvee or other armored vehicle constantly exposed to dust. Sorry to get off topic.

I've always used it. I just opened a jar that I got from a friend's estate, that was probably bought a few years ago. It still smells like Hoppes, but it seems to smell a little different. Maybe a little "benign" compared to the bottle (probably 80s vintage) I just finished.
