Question Hoppes No 9 for everything?

Reading the different threads on best lubes for M&Ps got me thinking if I'm doing anything wrong...

I have a Shield 9 and Pro 40. I use Hoppes No 9 solvent to clean everything - barrel, bore, frame, slide, rails, etc. till the patches run clean and dry.

Only lube I add is Hoppes Lubricating Oil on the barrel and trigger and use Tetra Gun Grease on the slide points.

Is it ok to just use Hoppes Solvent as a cleaner?

I've used it for years as a cleaner. I use other stuff, too, but that's been my standard for decades.

+1 to what the previous poster stated.

I've used Hoppes #9 since the 60's for cleaning all of my guns.
After cleaning and wiping off the residue I lightly lube the appropriate surfaces and wear points with CLP. I've tried other lubes / cleaners
but this is what works for me. Hoppes does a good job of cleaning out
powder and copper fouling in barrels and general crud that accumulates
in the action.

There are other newer and more pricey cleaners out there but for
normal cleaning and maintenance you can't go wrong with Hoppes.

DO NOT SOAK NICKEL GUNS OR GUN PARTS IN HOPPES NO. 9. IT WILL DESTROY THE FINISH. OTHER THAN THAT, IT IS A GREAT CLEANING PRODUCT………...

I use hoppes no.9 on my barrels and M Pro 7 gun cleaner on everything else. LPX oil and TW25b grease for lube. Just a little goes a long way.

I use Hoppes 9 and Wal-Mart banded WD-40 as cleaners
I also use a copper solvent on my SS barreled rifles
As you mentioned they are not lubricants
IMO the expensive stuff doesn't work any better

I think a very large proportion of 'gun guys' are suckers for new and supposedly improved gun stuff, partly because acquiring a new product provides an excuse to play with our guns.

#9 has given me excellent service for many decades.

I have no reason to use anything else.

I read on this forum that new production blued guns from S&W may be damaged by Hoppe's No. 9 (ammonia based solvents), so I won't use Hoppes on Nickel or new S&W blued guns. Still use it on stainless, Shield, XDS, etc.

Used to use Hoppes back in the day. I have moved onto Slip 2000 because its non toxic and I clean my guns in the basement with no windows. Other cleaners I used I was worried about impact on my health and they would stink up the house. Not an issue with Slip.

Nice. Thanks for the all the replies.

I used a CLP once and thought it left the guns too greasy.

I have yet to find a non-toxic cleaner that works well. I hate the sprays because I like to dunk the patch in the solvent.

But whatever I use, I finish with a round of Hoppes. Guns don't feel clean to me unless I smell Hoppes.

Does Slip have a new formula? Cause the jar I have of it from 10 years ago says it cleans carbon, not copper or lead.

My wife doesn't like the way it smells, so I only use it for cleaning non-chromed bores, and do that in the garage or outside out of respect for her nose.

I use CLP for cleaning and lube, and also use bearing grease to lube some things.

Kroil oil for lead or copper to loosening and JB's with kroil to clean up . Techron for carbon cleaning. Pro-Shot pro gold , zero friction and one-step for general cleaning , that covers general clean and slippery stuff needs .

I use it for the bore and any carbon buildup. Other than that just a wipe down with an oil-wet cloth And away it goes.

I use it on my M&P's. Heck I bought a 5 oz bottle back in the summer and it is just about gone. Good thing I have a new bottle standing by.

I remember seeing it's recipe in one of those books that list all kinds. So__I mixed up some. Had to get one item from a pharmacy I recall. Sure enough it smelled the same and worked the same but__I wound up with about two quarts of the stuff!
I use all Mil-Comm now, cleaner degreaser, TW25b and MC 2500
oil. Does seem to work as advertised. However, it may well be
a lot more slippery and protection than most of us really need.
Likely good gun grease and good gun oil would do fine.
I guess I love my P7M8 and my two Shields too much.
Have a Sig P232 as well__but not for carry.

I switched from Hoppes #9 to Hoppes Elite.
It seems to clean better and it has absolutely NO odor or scent.
It is a little bit more expensive, but it does the job for me and
my wife doesn't complain about the odor from the #9.
Also, the Elite will not damage the coating/finish on guns like the 642, 638. etc.

I was hoping someone would mention ballistol. Great stuff and been time tested. It's also great for use on the high end air rifles I like to shoot!

Elmer Keith advocated using only No 9 in very cold environments.

No being in any such fix, I use Hoppe's No 9 for cleaning and their Elite Gun Oil for everything else. Despite our wet hunting season and IWB carrying handguns in hot humid weather, I have had no issues with corrosion on a wide variety guns.

Funny thing is I'm only 43! When I was in the police academy they issued us a pistol cleaning kit. Came with Hoppes 9. Just stuck with it. Tried a ton since then. Just always go back to Hoppes.

Hoppes #9 has worked for us for over 30 years. I see no need to change. It has always done a good job cleaning the guns. I have never had copper or lead build up in my guns. The girls grew up smelling it and they love gun cleaning day. They say it smells like home. lol

Well "young buck" your wisdom is beyond your years!!!!

Thanks for your service, you guys are great! And you are with a smart department.

I'm 56 but I knew about Hoppe's 9 a looooooong time ago. Started using it in 1979 on my 870.
