The Pacific
Someone may have already mentioned this, although I never saw it if someone did...and I hope I don't get reprimanded for posting the link, but...
IF you liked "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers" (I sure did) you will be interested to know -- if you already don't -- that beginning on March 14th, 2010, the new HBO Speilberg/Hanks mini-series "The Pacific" will kick off the first of it's 10 episode run.
They have some mini-previews on the website and it sure looks good. Personally, I am really looking forward to it. Hell, be honest, I simply cannot wait!

I with you, buddy. I can't wait for this one. I think its based on "Helmet for my Pillow" by Robert Leckie and "With the Old Breed" By Eugene Sledge.

This has been in the works for a LONG time and I can't wait!
It is based on those two books, both are great, but With The Old Breed has to be one of the best books ever written about the PTO, I've read it numerous times.

I think the DVD set of Band of Brothers is the finest piece of television/film ever made. Amazing 10 hours series with all of the extras.
I believe The Pacific will be just as good and it is of great interest to me since my dad served in the Pacific Theatre at the end of WWII.

“With the old breed” is held by many to be the best combat memoir ever written. I can certainly not claim to have read all of them, but it is the best I have read.
I had a neighbor who was with the Marines in the Pacific including the landing on Okinawa. He could not bring himself to talk about it.
I can not imagine how you could begin to put that book on the small screen.

A good read is THE IMPERIAL JAPANESE NAVY (1941-1945) by Paul S. Dull.
It is a book about the Pacific from the Japanese point of view

The first book about WWII I ever read was Guadalcanal Diary by Richard Tregaskis. I was HOOKED! I'm reading At War With The Wind now. It's the story of the development of the kaiten mini-subs and the kamikaze aircraft. Can't get enough WWII reading! As a young boy, I had lots of military surplus...helmets, gas masks, bayonets, first aid kits, etc. that were given to me by returning GIs. I remember putting on a GI helmet that was so big that I couldn't see out from under it. And HEAVY! I was only 5.

It will be great! My Father fought with the 6th MarDiv at Okinawa. I have read tons of WWII history, mostly in the Pacific.

Damn, i was going to dump HBO,Showtime and everything extra due to the horrible amount of reruns and garbage they want you to pay for. Now I will have to hold off. Last time i was going to dump, Deadwood came on....Their series stuff is great but how many times do they think you should see most of the stuff on premium channels????i guess as long as people still pay they will still put on reruns again and again. But I will admit the mini series are pretty well made. Well most of them.

when Band of Bros was on HBO 1st run, my uncle who is a major ETO WWII history buff got HBO just to watch it and i had to hear about from him, then i got my own copy as a gift and now History channnel shows it unedited every few months all weekend long. i assume same will go for The Pacific. my cable bill is already $100+ ( includes phone and internet) and i dont wnat to add more. i can wait a few months/years for it.
i was especially happy to hear that The Pacific was being produced wth the same attention to detail ( uniforms, guns, equip etc. ) that Band of Bros was.

I look forward to this, too. My late dad was with the 1st Marine Division, and on Peleliu and Okinawa. Rough going. God bless 'em, one and all.

The standing-tall lanky, no-shirt Gyrene is my Dad, PFC Marvin F. Schroeder 6th JASCO. He and his mates are setting up a revetment for comm gear three days after the beach assault [it was a walk ashore] on Okinawa. They are at one of the occupied airfields.

Thanks...those are some of the best WWII photos I have seen and this thread reminded me that I had them. I found the web site some time ago while searching for other material. Wonder how many other similar photos are out there in Cyber Space?? I still have over 1000 35 mm color slides that I took 40 years ago while in the Philippines, Japan, Okinawa and Vietnam. Need to get busy scanning them!
