I carried a 6" Model 66 in the mid to late '80's as a city cop in S. Florida. Went to a 4" Python, then the dept. issued Model 669 (mandatory). Now I carry the issue Glock 35 in Central Fla.

I carried a 4" Colt Trooper in the 60's; then a 2 3/4" Ruger Security 6 for a while, then we went to Beretta 92s. Since I retired, my department went in to HK 45's.

From 1981 to 1991, I usually carried a 6 inch Model 66. I qualified with and sometimes carried others, including a 5 inch M-27 and 6 inch Model 28, but most of the time it was the M-66.
The department switched to autoloaders in 1991.

I carried a Model 28 6" for a little bit but found it uncomfortable sitting in the car. I went back to my old Model 58.. As Tim Allen would say I wanted " MO POWER!!
The .41 was death on car doors and tail gates.

Model 28 6"
I carried the 6" model 28 for about four years from 75 until 79, when I left that department. We used a Safariland swivel holster. Most guys beat the hell out of the grips on doors and seatbelt buckles. When that thing came out the bad guys stood still!

My revolver was always a 4". An early mentor told me that when it comes to drawing and firing in a split-second situation, "that extra 2 inches will get you killed." I do know that a ramped front sight is the only way to go for a duty revolver... when shooting PPC as a young officer, I had my speedloader case too close to my break-front holster. The vertical surface of the Patridge front side got caught on the edge of the (snapped) speedloader case flap, and I lost several seconds (and probably a few points!) on that relay.

Hi:
My last Agency when I began issued me a 6" Model 29 for a service revolver, and a 4" Model 28 for "Off Duty".
Jimmy
P.S. I was much younger, stronger, and slimmer then.

The longest revolver barrel I have carried on duty is 1 7/8 (S&W 642 BUG). But my Dad is a retired LEO and while he only carried 4" guns, I know a few of his comrades carried 6" revolvers. The duty gear of today is nowhere near as impressive as a low slung revolver and rows of shiny bullets. Always made me think of my Dad like a Marshall in the old West. My stuff us all dull kydex and polymer.

I carried a 6" Model 28 for a while, but, as another poster said, it was very uncomfortable in a car.
I went to a Model 19 4", though there were a couple of Colts that worked their way in for short periods of time.

Started with a 65 4", changed depts. then was handed a Colt Trooper III in 4", went to Sigs first with a p226 then ended up with a p229. For years I always carried a 5 shot or little auto as a back-up. Now I guess a bunch of full auto guys show up when they call for help.

The first half of my law enforcement career were during the "revolvers only" days (pre-1985). I have carried a 6" Model 19 and a 5" Model 586 as duty weapons. For off duty and plain clothes work I usually carried a Colt Government Model or a Browning Hi Power.
My final 6-1/2 years were spent as a chief so I got to make the rules!

Early on I carried a 6" honestly can't recall if it was a Dan Wesson or Ruger Security Six.
I got the same advice regarding the shorter barrel length and also learned that it was very uncomfortable in the car.
Tried several different brands and finally carried a 586 4" until I went with the 4506 in 1989.
Self loading sidearms ever since, now have the M&P 45 ACP.

When I first started, I carried the issue Model 15 with 4 inch barrel in a Don Hume Jordan holster (also issued). When I transferred to the motorcycle unit, I opted to carry a personally owned Security Six with a 6 inch barrel in a snap-swivel/drop loop holster (also personally owned). After the holster getting pretty beat up, and me getting wacked more than once by the holster, I opted to carry a 4 inch Colt Python in a mid-rise thumb break holster. I basically stayed with that type of holster through the rest of my career, although I did convert to semi-autos.

Carried a 6" Model 19 for a little while.
Also, carried a 5 1/2" Colt SAA chambered for 44 Spl. till I picked up a 3 1/2" Model 27.
Even carried a 5"-27 for a short time.
Ah, those were the days boys.

Been so long ago that I'm not sure of the model but I do remember it was a S&W .38 Special with a 4" barrel. We also had a snub nose 38/44 on a large frame for concealed work but heck it was bigger than the 4" model. This was all back in the 60s.

I currently carry a 6in. Model 14-2 as one of my duty weapons. I mainly do it out of nostalgia but it serves the secondary purpose of really bugging the young guys. Annoys the heck out of them when I out shoot their Plastic Fantastics.

As I recall, it was a 6" mdl 19 in the late 70's to mid 80's. Still have it. The action was home worked til it was smooth as glass. No way I would carry a slicked action on the road today. Major lawsuit waiting to happen. Occasionally take it to the range and it still shoots like a dream.

My early days involved a 4 " nickel 19 and a swivel holster. They were good for vehicles, but not for everyone. I liked the four inch K-frame alot, but it was not the best to use as an attention getter "club". The N-frames and 38-44 heavy duties were probably more suitable for that.

I started with a Model 28 six inch in a Bianchi Breakfront holster then a Hoyt in '77. I was young, and didn't mind the weight and because it was my only handgun until I went to a 4 inch version with the same style holster. I changed to a Model 39-2 in a border patrol Safariland holster until the Dept. I was with adopted a Model 59 with a Safariland Hi Ride holster. My next Dept. issued a 6 or 4 inch Model 686 and a Davis Holster. I opted for the 6 inch and put it into a Hoyt jacket model. The Hoyt's were fast, resonably secure and very comfortable to wear even in a car. When I got off probation I was allowed to choose my own and went with a Colt Gov't model in .45acp with a Safariland Border patrol. I used a second one in a shoulder holster during winter months. The Colt just scared the _____ out of people when they saw it out of the holster. It served me well until I had to retire.

My police academy firearms instructor carried a 6" Stainless Security Six and he was the most feared and respected shooter of all the LEOs in the county. That was back in the early/mid 80s.
When a LEO mentioned how Howard Wilson could shoot, heads bowed and a moment of silence followed.

I carried a 6 1/2" Mod 29, a 6 1/2" Mod 25, switching to a 6" [my 6 1/2" was sometimes used in Bullseye Competition]. The 25's were in 45ACP.
I started out with a revolver in the Mid 1970's. Switched to a 1911 after a few years then when the new Chief "banned" semiautos, I went back to the 44 Mag. Then the next new Chief "banned" the big Magnums, so I went to the Mod 25 in 45 ACP.
I carried the Mod 25 as late as 1986.

My duty weapon in the mid-60's(Federal) was a Model 13 S/W with a 6" bull barrel with no adjustable rear sight.
The caliber was 357 mag, and the bbl was specifically made and used for beat-downs on my Fugitive Apprehension Team.
Our 357 Mag ammunition was made by Western, yellow box and was silver pointed and encased copper for car engine and car body penetration.
This was in the 1960's and early 70's. This ammo is not available today.
Today's tactics are different now ,,,using SWAT teams.

When I started in October 1978 I carried a 6" model 19. I have since carried a Beretta 92, 4006, 4506, and lastly a Sig P220 .45. Shot the best with the old '19. The Beretta sucked, the 4006 couldn't hit the barn. the 4506 was a great gun, but got heavy by end of shift. The P220 is the best I carried. Great gun, great caliber, and totally reliable. BUGs ran the gauntlet. 38 1/2 years only shot deer in car/deer accidents. Hopefully will leave with no further shots fired.

One of our captains, the late Bob Jack, was Chief of Detectives for years. As such, he usually wore a sportcoat and slacks or a suit to work. Captain Jack was a big, burly bear-of-a-man type. He carried a six inch Model 27 in a shoulder holster for years.

In the mid 70s our department said any .38 you can qualify with. Smith and Wesson revolvers mostly and generally 4 inch versions. I carried a Model 15 until I got a Model 66. Thumb break Jordan Border Patrol was optional, otherwise a similar model with a strap. 2 Six Round dump pouches for ammo although some of us had a speed loader in our pocket. There were a few officers carrying the bigger N-Frame .38s. Off duty, .38s, Smith or Colt. Still have both the revolvers. Department went to Smith and Wesson .45 Semi Autos in the 90s. Glocks now, like most other departments around these parts.

The revolvers I carried were all issue guns: a 4" Model 10, and then, when I was a Defective for a while, a 3" Model 36. We went to bottom feeders early, with Sig 228s.

Pre. Model 24, 6" barrel
We purchased our own back then and you can imagine my pride when I found a 5 screw S&W Revolver chambered for the .44 Special Cartridge, I carried it in a Front Break Holster plus all the other trimmings. That was during the mid 60's, likely in 1966 or 1967.

my late cousin carried his privately owned 6" S&W mod 19 for two tours BUD/S RVN primarily as Brown Water Navy, then carried it during the first 10 years or so as a LEO after he left the Navy. He then carried a 6" S&W mod 57 until his death.
