Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Dirty Harry (or is this "crime drama")
Die Hard
Terminator 2
Desperado (even though our hero used Rugers)
I love Die Hard because the hero was just a regular guy and it's really funny in spots as they mock certain institutions.

Lethal Weapon, The Rock, Sudden Impact, The Getaway (with Steve McQueen, of course), and if it qualifys, the original Walking Tall.

Went to dinner at a friends house Saturday night. He has built a home theatre, an entire room, acoustically perfect with leather theatre seats and a 10' screen. To demo the system he put on "2012". I haven't seen the whole movie yet but if the scenes of them fleeing LA as it collapses into oblivion are any indication this flic has got to be on the list! Also got to include the early Lethal Weapon series, most of Clint Eastwoods catalog (please spare me the Bridges of Madison County). The new James Bond, Daniel Craig, makes the cut as well.

Spartacus, Saving Private Ryan, Moby Dick (the old Gregory Peck version), the first Star Wars trilogy, and Deep Throat. Just kidding on that last one, but you did say "action" movies didn't you?

Forgot to list mine.....Wind and the Lion, Zulu, Lawrence of Arabia, The Wild Bunch, and Saving Pvt. Ryan.........Two honorable mentions...Bridge Over The River Kwai, and the Original Bullet not the miserable remake. Old timers.....Casablanca...........Keep them coming as I get older I find renting DVD's is not all that bad, along with shooting and golf...

Die Hard... Gotta love that Beretta with a 100 rd magazine.
Untouchables...S@W revolvers, Thompsons and '97 Winchesters.
Bonnie and Clyde... Thompsons and 1917 S@Ws.
Fail Safe...No gunplay to speak of, but chilling.
Dr. Strangelove...Slim Whitman on the Bomb is a classic.
Von Ryan's Express...Hey, it's got Sinatra, need I say more?
Notice the newest one is 1987. That says it all.

I used to work in a video store, and I'm a pretty big movie lover. I've rated over 800 movies on netflix that I have seen, and I'm still coming across ones I have seen but haven't rated yet.
Trying to name the best 5 is impossible. Just looking through other responses made me of a lot of others I love.
So.. randomly.. in no particular order and I know a lot will be left off:
- Indiana Jones (I'm going to cheat and group them together)
- The Good the Bad and the Ugly (Kind of more western than action, but..)
- Taken (newer.. staring Liam Neason. HIGHLY recommend it if you haven't seen it)
- Die Hard (again, I like them all... but I like the 2nd the least)
- Terminator 1 and 2 (3 and 4 are enjoyable but not as good)
- Bourne Identity (the series)
- Independence Day (a bit corny, but I still love it)
- First Blood (aka Rambo 1)
- The Fifth Element (extremely corny, but very fun to watch)
- Predator (1.. NOT 2. BTW another Predator is coming out in July 2010, not an Alien vs Predator, but a Predator sequel called Predators)
I'm going to be mad when I think of something so obvious that should have made it on my list.

So many good movies! I've enjoyed most of the ones listed here. In terms of action movies, though, which I consider different from Westerns, I like:
The Getaway - actually I like the newer version better, mainly because of Kim Bassinger.
The Mummy series - good mix of action and comedy.
The Bourne series - awesome action.
Saving Private Ryan - very realistic war movie.
No Country for Old Men - just good in every way.
Casino Royale (Daniel Craig) - great Bond characterization.
There are so many more, but you asked for five...and even so, I gave you six. I'm sure I will think of others later that I like better.

Last two weeks of "The Pacific" on HBO have been visually incredible. "Real life" depiction of war that I found hard to watch at times because it appears to be so realistic.

Due to the response especially about ZULU I got it out and watched it again for I don't know how many times....What acting, no out of the world special effect, no imposable shots. No unbelievable heroics, but what a cast of real actors. Visual effects stunning. Cains retort to Baker....Well I'll be here, Won't I. The Color Sargent was an added plus. I imagine he was what senior Sgt.s were like in the colonial world of the time. The professional. Great flick even by today's overwhelming special effects. The Zulu's were great. Not bad voices as one of the Welshmen stated "they have a great bass section but no high tenors. I wonder how many South Africans got work making that film??.

Equilibrium --- Anyone who hasn't watched this...you need to.
Boondock Saints
V for Vendetta --- Surprised no one else has mentioned this.
Resident Evil
Dawn of the Dead (the remake) --- I guess some might label these last two as horror more than action?
The Bourne Trilogy
Band of Brothers --- I consider this to be one of the best movies/miniseries/whatever...call it action or war movie or whatever...it's just the BEST!
I excluded Westerns, as a separate genre. Were I to include Westerns...
The Broken Trail
Silverado
The Magnificent Seven
Shane
Also...I believe it's "Slim Pickens".
