OK.....so I have my new PT wood fence up and am ready to finish it. I've used Olympic's Waterproof original linseed oil based solid color stain for years and the stuff is the best.....liquid gold for wood.

I've found out this product (and apparently ALL linseed based stain) has become unobtainable in PA. It seems someone has determined oil stain is too hazardous for us and the environment and it's no longer available here. Is this a PA. thing or is anyone else in the same boat?

Also, what's your experiences with the high end water based stains everyone sells now? I've never used them and I'm skeptical about their durability/weather resistance compared to a true oil finish.

Thanks

I would go out of state and buy Cabot Clear Solution if that's what I had to do. If they ban oil stain why not oil paint? Have you been to Lowes? That's where I buy Cabot products.

I think your NEW PT lumber will need to weather (dry) for 30 days or more before you stain it. Check out some directions of products online. The ones I've seen said to wait.

You might want to give cedar toned CWF a try. It's water based and you should be able to get it at your local H.D. or Lowe's.

We can have Linseed based stain in PA , it just has to be VOC compliant. Apparently your favorite Olympic hasn't been made in a VOC compliant formula so it's verboten. Lowes carries all sorts of Cabot oil based product.

Somewhere along the line our state government put us in a restricted VOC category similar to California , probably to reduce smog that went away on it's own when the steel mills all closed. Makes it somewhat of a pain to buy bodywork supplies too.

The panels have weathered about 5-6 weeks so it's ready to go....I did look at the Cabot line and I'm thinking about it but part of the project has already been done(couple years ago) with the Olympic....color match is a consideration.

Appreciate the responses :)

Mod 29, the front page of my Lowes ad today lists 5$ off various paints /stains , one of these is " Olympic Maximum Wood Protection Stain" , my local store doesn't carry any Olympic stain, only paints but being closer to Pittsburgh you may have more choices. Just a heads up ;) Or..... Take a holiday drive over into Ohio and buy some unlimited VOC stuff :)

Use a deck cleaner or brighter before staining. It really helps in penetration and uniform coverage. It usually is just a bleach(or mild acid) solution. If you have a pressure washer it's easy to apply. If you get the chlorine for pools it is a stronger solution than laundry bleach and is cheaper. Just mix with water. You can also just use a compressed air sprayer (cheap plastic bug sprayer) Then rinse, dry and apply your stain.

While I have never used it myself I have been hearing good things about a product called "One Time Wood".
Suppose to last up to 7 years.
