Advice on Cleaning S&W'S

I’m getting ready to polish some guns, to that end I have bought 2 products Flitz, and Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. Does anyone have experience with either of these products and/or recommendations? I should add the guns are High polish Nickel and Old Bright Bluing (Both 70's). I have a Drimmel Tool can or should I use that?

STOP NOooooooo, Don't put any of those products on other than a stainless gun. Do some research first. No also to the dremil tool nothing more than hand work should be needed.

OK, got it. And this is the start of my research, thought someone would know. Now have you ever tried one of these products? Thought the Drimmel might be to much but had to ask. Thanks. Anybody else have any sugestions?
 
As Nathan said, DON'T mess with the blue.

I have used Flitz and Simichrome extensively to polish nickle silver, as in knife bolsters. Either works fine to restore luster, but bear in mind that both are mild abrasives. Their use on fine guns is a means to remove the blue, not to enhance them.

I have been lovingly wiping blue Smiths with natural sheepskin for 50 years with excellent results.

The dremel is handy for polishing internal parts if you are skilled, but has no place in routine gun maintenance.
 
dont use either except on a stainless gun...for a blued or nickle finish use renaissance wax...nothing better on the market
 
Sorry to disagree but you can use Flitz on either Factory Blue and/or Nickle finish. Mothers Mag is a little more abrasive and would not use on Blued but can be used on Nickle with a soft cloth. No power tools.

Well OCD thanks for the input, the reason I got the Flitz is because I saw it in another thred and someone said it was good for nickel guns. Then on the package it says it's guaranteed to not harm the finnish of a factory hot bluing. I'll keep reading and searching info but I am thinking about trying it on a "for trade gun" before I use it on a keeper. Anyone else have real world knowledge about this product?
 
I have used Flitz, Semi Chrome, and Mothers on stainless. I find Mothers easier to work with, I do my stainless weapons by hand, and I like the finish I get. Look at the 649 in the top of my avatar. The finish looks like a mirror.:)
 
Thanks 0311, it may have been your thread where I saw the Flitz talked about, not sure. I want to do something about that recent auction find before I put it away. 40+ years sitting in a drawer will leave a dull look to even the best bluing. And I don’t want to add to it, so a good polish and some good gun oil before I put it away. The same goes for the Nickel 19-4 similar situation, it still looks great but I don’t want to put it away and then 10 years from now it has started to rust or something. I need to put them in a condition that will maintain their value for my heirs because the next time they come out of the safe it won’t be me taking them out. Thanks again for the input.
 
Polishing

I use Mothers mag and aluminum polish on my stainless guns. Apply a small amount using finger tip than polish using cotton T shirt. Start with a light pressure, then reapply and buff as necessary to achieve the finish you want.

For blued guns, as I'M cheap, I use Mothers gold class car wax,apply a SMALL amount let haze up and buff off.
 
New gun owner

Not saying you're a new gun owner but here's how this susually works.

New gun owner + new gun + Dremel Tool = New gun owner and a really worthless gun.

Well here is how it susually works here. When uncle sam issued me my first rifle it was an m-14 if that tells you anything. 2nd I ask a bunch of questions then make up my mind on what and how I will do somthing. 3rd a tool -any tool- is only as good or bad as the individual useing it is skilled in it's use. But thanks for the input, it's always good to know their are folks out there willing to pass along information.

Dremel and like rotary tools are good for certain things. Polishing guns is not one of them. They are capable of tearing through a finish with just the lightest touch. They also are next to impossible to maintain an even pressure and thus even finish on a flat surface. They are good for cutting off, grinding, drilling etc.
 
I believe Mother's Billet polish is even less abrasive than Mothers Mag polish.

I just ordered some Flitz for a site called properautocare.com. They carry all 3 products, and have good descriptions, comparisons, etc.
