I was travelling recently in North Carolina and spotted a billboard noting Mackey's as the world's largest gun store.
Billboard hype or the real deal? I've never heard of the place or have seen any ads on the sale sites.

It may be the world's largest in terms of building size. They have a large inventory too. I do not know how they would stack up worldwide when building size and inventory are compared. Never the less, it is large. Lots of ammo. lots of long guns and lots of handguns etc. It is well worth spending an hour or two browsing around and then go next door to Mackey's Landing nut and gift shop. They have lots of peanuts etc., some of the best fresh ground, home made peanut butter that I have ever eaten. Free samples of nuts etc.

Real deal, I believe. I asked them once how they knew they were the largest, and received this legit sounding answer: Their insurance is purchased through the NRA, and the inventory in their store is insured for more than any other gunstore in the same program, according to the NRA. I don't know that to be factual, but it sounded reasonable.

Having been there a few times, and having visited maybe a 100 or so gunstores up and down the East Coast in the last 40+ years, I have certainly never seen another that big. It is not my favorite gunstore to visit, but it is a big one.

I guess I'll never understand folks...

Having a big building don't mean a thing. Having the largest inventory doesn't mean anything either if it just sits there...

It's how much profit they make in order for the store to stay open and grow and how they treat their customers are the two important things to remember. It's the turns the shop gets on that inventory.

There are some substantial gunshops that I have visited over the years- I really don't know anyone could make a judgment call unless they got to see the books.

It's kind like the book of world records where they have different classifications- biggest shop by size, largest inventory in dollar amount, largest by number, largest by square foot, largest by weight, largest in sales, largest shop with the largest owner, largest number of lever actions...you get the picture. ;)

Large Economy Size

Aaron, I have visited both and agree that Hyatt's is a large store but they are small in comparison to Mackey's. This store is so far from civilization that Missionaries deliver the mail by donkey.

For the doubters, Mackey's Landing Gun Store is beyond comprehension.

Many very large rooms and everything is divided in catagories...revolvers only in this direction, bottom feeders in another, shotguns, rifles all in separate very large rooms...etc, etc.

The ammo room is extremely large...literally like strolling through a large supermarket but with ammo instead grub. All brands and calibers, out of production and in.

It is more overwhelming to me than going to a Bass Pro Shop and trying to pick out one fishing rod.

A few years ago I had a bad itch for a short barreled Ruger Vaquero .45 with the birds head grip. This was when these guns were semi-hard to come by. Mackey's had a display case full of them.

If in doubt, check it out.

Having the largest inventory of anything if it just sits there the store isn't going to be in business long.
