Win M70 Refinshed

I picked up a nice post 64 M70 .30-06 last year for a hunt in Vermont. She was in pretty good used condition though had obviously been used on a few hunts as the stock had a number of small scratches and dings. The rifle dates to 1979 and the hard rubber fore end tip, butt plate and grip cap had shrunk a bit from age so I decided it was time for a careful refinish. I steamed out as many of the dings as I could and leveled the wood to match up to the hard rubber caps. A little sanding with some 400 grit and a light coat of stain made it ready for about 6 coats of tung oil. The finish was finally hard enough to put the rifle back together and snap a few quick shots.

It kind of looks like an older Leupold 3x9 in Weaver pivot mounts on that Model 70. Nice rifle!

Beautiful job! Redfield scope?

Did the fore end black tip have any dings in it? I have one in .243 and the only real blemishes are on that black tip. I'm trying to determine the best way to attack the problem.

You hit the nail on the head. I was pleasantly surprised when I found the pivot mount keeps a good zero.

The only issues I had with the black fore end was the finish was chipped off. I removed the finish from the whole stock with Formby's Refinisher, I had to be careful because Formby's ate the white line plastic rather easily, but it had no effect on the hard rubber. Upon sanding the black caps the smell made me believe it is the same hard rubber used in pipe bits. It's pretty easy to work as I have done a bit of pipe repair.

This is the M-70 introduced in 1972, to clean up the flaws of the 1964-68 revision.

The action is usually very smooth and fast, with a bolt head guide. I think you'll like it, having dealt with the cosmetic issues on this example.

I have liked it very much, though it's not the "Pre-64" it's still a fine rifle that shoots just over MOA groups. Perfectly acceptable for a 8lb hunting rifle.

I inherited my dad's pre-64 in 270 with a pivot mount. It is reliabel to 500 yards as long as you have a good rest and trigger control. I have a pivot mount that will go on a newer type commercial mauser some day. Nice looking Model 70.
