sp101 vs. 640-1
I have a chance to acquire an SP101 on a trade deal. I've owned a 640-1 before and even pocket carried it comfortably. I understand that the Ruger is really too big for that, but how does it really compare to the 640? I'd like to hear pros and cons on this if anyone has a comment. I kinda like these chunky blasters, and hate to pass on this one, if the other party will commit to the trade. All thoughts are appreciated.

The Ruger SP101 is built like a tank, and weighs accordingly. I would rather own and carry a 3", HB, RB, K frame.

I have both revolvers. The SP101 is too heavy for pocket carry. The Ruger wrap around grip makes for better felt recoil than the 640. My Ruger also has a significantly better trigger than the 640. The 640 is thinner and easier to conceal. While the trigger is heavy I don't really see that as a problem for the close range use the gun is likely to be used for. They are both excellent well made reliable guns. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I've had couple SP101's. I had both the standard and bobbed hammer in the 2". Also a .327 3". If you wear baggy pants you could probably pocket carry it. For me the SP101 is a holster gun. I'd rather have a RB Security/ Speed six without adj. sights. Not much bigger than an sp101.

jframe: I can't give you a comparison, since I haven't owned a 640; but I can tell you that I pocket carry my SP101 regularly. It isn't too big, as long as your pants have reasonably deep pockets. The weight is a problem only if one likes a loosely-fitting belt(which, granted, can be more comfortable).
When I was looking for a carry piece six years or so ago I didn't feel I could spend the extra $150 or so the Smith Js were bringing, so I obtained the Ruger from a member here. I'm very satisfied with it, especially the stock grip. I don't like round butt grips, and the Ruger is square. Also it is rubber in the front and back for a positive grip and cushioned recoil, but plastic on the sides to help it slide in and out of the pocket a little more easily.

I think the SP101 is one of the finest revolvers made. Mine will be one of the last I let go. I keep it in the suburban. The penultimate truck gun.

Can't add anymore than this. Pretty much says it all.
