Bear attacking live buck
At the Sportsmans Blog, http://sportsmansblog.com/2010/09/02...gressive-bear/ there is an article and pictures of a bear attacking a still living although injured buck. I always thought they just ate the remnants of a kill. I come up on black bear as I walk on logging roads once or twice a year but they are shy and bolt once they are aware of me. I'll have to remind myself to walk as if I'm not injured.

Never venture into black bear territory if you walk with a limp!

What a horrific way for that poor buck to have to die--first a car---then the bear.

Makes you wonder how many road kills may take place in that area. That may not have been that bear's first road-side meal.

I came across a similar incident a few years back during deer season. I watched a bear attack and drag off a wounded doe. I suspect the bear had followed the smell of blood and was trailing her before I appeared on the scene. Still hunting across a large marsh area I jumped her from a small piece of high ground out in the middle. Could tell right away she was hurt and not going far. I took my time as I wanted to make a clean shot to put her outta her misery. Who wounded her and when I had no idea, but since it was early in the morning, late in the season, I figured she had been hurt for a while since the bed she left had old dried blood in it, and you could tell she had laid in the same spot for quite some time. Anyway, the second time she got up in front of me @ about 75 yards I saw a black bear going thru the marsh grass towards her. He knocked her down and grabbed her by the throat. Once she quit moving, he drug her off to another patch of high ground. The next day I found her half eaten body buried under brush and debris in the same spot. I figured the bear wasn't too far away. As with the buck in the photos, much better for some animal to make the most of it, as opposed to the animal going to waste.

Why would anyone expect a bear to eat only dead things it comes across? They're not vultures. Like most animals, bears are creatures of opportunity and apparently no one told this bear he was only supposed to eat carrion.

Thank goodness that hungry bear wasn't aroused too.
