spudgun leakage
My son and I were shoot the spud gun the other day and I noticed it didn't have alot of snap. I thought the Aquanet had lost it's oomph or something. After a close look I found that it was leaking through the striker mounting hole, under the nut.
anybody else shoot taters? My son is fairly good with one. I will attach a pic of the leak and a pick of the target he shot at about 30 feet. The target board was 1/4" plywood.
Peace,
gordon

Seems like a waste of a good tater to me.

For a really devastating projectile, try wrapping a D size flashlight battery in a shop rag to make a snug fit in the barrel. It will knock a hole in 1/2 in plywood.

I have a couple of them, one with a 2" dia barrel for the large taters and a 1 1/4" dia barrel for the smaller ones. I showed them off to some city folks and explained that out here in the country, we shoot our food.
Aquanet is my fuel of choice too.

I took a piece of the barrel that was left over and sprayed the inside with WD-40, then I tooka wal-mart bag and stuffed it down inside to a depth of about 6". I then placed a green walnut inside and filled the rest with expandable foam. they shoot great.
Misty, it is only a waste of good taters if momma finds out. It is my sons fault anyhow.
Straight up walnuts work good if you can find ones that fit snuggly. My son killed a possum with one last year, at least he thought it was dead, as it woke up and ran away.
Peace,
gordon

They wear out faster when you use full power loads constantly. Also I believe your propellant may be to blame. I use White Rain in mine and it seems to get optimal velocity with lower pressures. For light loard apples work well.
In any event should be an easy fix-a trip to the big box for a new plug and a little drill work and you should be good to go-I don't think it needs to go back to the factory. As long as your replacing the plug-I would spring for a new igniter also.

It's a guy thing Misty-much like the Three Stooges-we don't expect the woman folks to understand.

Never have built a spud gun...
But, had a bowling pin mortar 'placement once.
Those pins were like boattail spitzers...

Drop the hair spray and step away from the PVC.
Get an electric sprinkler valve, a 120 PSI air source, some hose, a 9 volt battery, and a "FIRE" switch.
Build a real spud gun, a pneumatic spud gun with repeatable accuracy, and varying power levels adjusted by a pressure regulator.
Mine is on a gun carriage, and I sight it in on a power pole about 200 yds out. A little "bracket and halving" and I paste the pole good, till my taters run out.
Can obtain a 4 per minute rate of aimed fire, higher for area fire.

We definitely need to see pictures of this guy. My son fires a 2" about 200 yds but accuracy is a problem because of charge and potato weight.

As far as potato weight, have you made a sizer for your ammo" Take a scrap piece of barrel pipe, put an outside bevel on one end (sharpen it) and drive it down over an oversize potato. Cut to length, presto...consistent ammo.
The pneumatic power source provides consistent propellant.
At one time I was looking into getting a rifled tube (they are available), but decided unless I went up to 250 PSI, I wouldn't see any real increase in accuracy.
And, @ 250 PSI, you won't be using PVC, at least after the first "Fire in the Hole!"

I wonder if Tater guns are legal for chasing off car burglars or teenagers just asking for some "medicine". Probably not, however it's a very tempting thought.

Think "high angle fire". Set up in the back yard, behind the barn, whatever. You will need an observer and some 2 way radios (cell phones work in a pinch). Then walk the rounds in.

You guys have given me a great new project! It occurs to me that the 370 acre former sod farm directly behind my house is perfect for launching. I can stand on the deck and have a clear field of fire for 900+ yards. Just how loud are those things anyway?

I was responsible for getting all "homemade weapons" banned from the firestation I work at when an apple left it's intended course and hit the roof of a house ( I think that red delicious was out of balance) I walked through the woods to the house to take responsibility for my actions, but when I got there five people were standing in the yard discussing how an apple fell from an airplane and what the odds of it hitting there house were. I just walked back into the woods and they never knew where it really came from.
