A friend of mine recently picked up an M1 Garand with a reciever that says "Made in the USA by CAI, St. Albans, VT". I take that to mean it is a newly manufactured reciever with surplus parts from other rifles.

He field stripped it, it has a lot of Springfield Armory parts (op rod, trigger group) but the barrel has a marking I have never heard of, it is marked "RSC 1955", I assume the 1955 is the date of manufacture, but has anyone ever heard of "RSC"?

What do you think of these CAI Garands?

I bought two for $400 each at a gunshow some twelve years ago when I was young and dumb. I could not get them to function right and sold them at a loss of about one hundred each.

Knowing what I know now, I likely could have got them running as I have spent the past twelve years shooting the CMP matches regularly.
Personally I would avoid them, and purchase from the CMP.
However as he already has it. Shoot it and enjoy it. Just remember it needs ammo with a medium burning powder. The CMP has surplus ammo that is fairly priced and I here Federal makes M1 specific ammo.

The CAI cast receivers are often out of spec. I remember helping a man at a gunshow, who had one. The op-rod jumped out of the receiver and I was able to pop it back in. We hand functioned the action several times and the op-rod continued to dis-engage. You can always buy a USGI receiver and transfer the parts to make a nice shooter.
