LAPD/$4.00 money
I was watching old Adam-12 episodes on RTV yesterday. In episode #1, the watch commander tells Malloy that he is getting a new partner named Reed, "23 years old, finished 4th in his class at the Academy, and a four-dollar shooter".
Can anybody explain just what Reed had to accomplish to get his four dollars ? Was it monthly ? Bullseye score ? Does LAPD still do this practice ?

Wow! The people on this forum know EVERYTHING!!!
I grew up watching Adam-12 and similar vintage cop shows. Never outgrew it. I'm pushing 52 years old, and they still pick out my work clothes for me!

Basically, it is a Marksman program that gave bonus pay for each bi-weekly paycheck.

If I remember correct Reed is wearing a Sharpshooters medal, so he is earning $4.00 bi-weekly for his 340-379 score on the 400 point "BONUS" or target course v/s regular qual that pays zip. That was $4.00 in 70's money, today he would get $8.00 so not sure if that stayed up with inflation, but its beats nothing.
Malloy I believe is a Distinguished Expert $32.00 bi-weekly, now, so he buys the beer.

Didn't they start out with K-38's (M-14) and switch to M-15's?

I get $7.52 a month in shoot pay from the LASD for being a 265+ shooter. They really need to adjust for inflation.

I grew up watching Adam 12 and never really gave it much thought afterwards but with all the talk here on the forum about that series I just had to see it again so I took the plunge and ordered the full series box set. I figured that there must be something to all the buzz so I couldn't go wrong.
Being the nostalgic sucker that I am I also seen the complete "Combat" & "Highway Patrol" series boxed sets where I found Adam 12 and ordered those as well.
I just love watching any 1950's thru the 70's movies & shows where cars were an intregal part of the story lines and I figured "Highway Patrol" would give me that, in spades.

How about Joe Friday's "Hotshot phone"? As in:
"It's not much of a life, unless you don't mind missing a Dodger game because the hotshot phone rings."
I suppose the "hotshot" phone is when you get a call to come in during non-scheduled hours?
