LCP sights?

Just bought a Ruger LCP and like everything about it pretty much except the sights. I've had Keltecs that have pretty lame sights, and I can't believe Ruger copied their design but made the sights even worse! It would be better if the LCP had no sights then I wouldn't strain my eyes trying to see them, and I know its just a point and shoot belly gun, but I still like my guns to have decent sights. J-frames have pretty good sights and you never hear anyone complaining about them snagging or getting in the way. I guess I could paint the front sight red but there is hardly nothing there to paint, so I was wondering if something else could be done, like a little JB Weld on the top of the front sight? I know there are gunsmiths that attach some nice fixed sights for 150 bucks or so but I don't want to spend that kind of money on a gun I got cheap. Any suggestions?

:) The Kahr's and the Sigs have sights but cost a lot more. The Kel-Tec's and LCP's are good guns but for the low price you don't get a lot of extras. Don

Given the range the LCP is intended for, there really isn't much of a need for sights. I think I used the sights on my LCP once and realized I shoot better without them.

The LCP is designed for card-table ranges under quick draw-aim-fire/life and death circumstances.

IMHO it doesn't need sights at all...just to be kept clean with one and the spout and a full magazine of reliable ammo.

My only "mods" for the LCP was good lube and a silver sharpie line down the front sight and two silver dots on the rear sight. It works for me.

I know its just a point and shoot belly gun,

I believe like the others, and you answered your own question.
A quick pull, fast, point, up close, face to face little defensive auto. I think that's all Ruger had in mind for the LCP.

I am going to have a gunsmith install a shotgun bead where my front sight is, then epoxy an XS Big Dot Tritium sight (the model intended for vent rib shotgun barrels) over it. ;)

Trade it for a Ruger LCR revolver and you'll be able to actually hit stuff out to 15 yards.....

And it won't malfunction...

I bought a Ruger LCR recently and am very impressed with it, quite accurate with a great trigger, it's what I carry when I need deep concealment. Something that I know will operate when I need it.

I have to agree with the previous posts; the LCP is a point and shoot, up close and personal gun. I found mine to be reasonably accurate at close range which is what it was made for. But, if you want sights, the recommendation above about a silver sharpee sound reasonable - and cheap.

I don't understand the objections of so many gun enthusiast of wanting to put decent sights on a handgun. A slingshot? yeah. A pipebomb? yeah. Maybe even a stick gun in a prison. But not a good quality handgun. Maybe Farmer17 is like me and really likes good sights on any firearm he has. There may just be a time when he wants to or really needs to actually hit something futher than 5 feet away with an LCP, and that's all he has! He probably will have left his 80 caliber magnum revolver with a 14.5 inch barrell with Nikon 500 dollar scope that everyone else keeps in their pants pocket at home.:D It has a 2 3/4" barrell folks. There are people here and many other places that want good sights on their Smiths's with shorter barrels than this.

If 5 or 10 feet is all this and other 380's are good for, why not pass a law to forbid such a useless round? Lets get rid of the 32's also, and the 25's and 22's.

I apologize for being so antagonistic about this, but everytime I see someone post about putting decent sights on a small frame handgun, it's always "put it in their belly and pull the trigger!" type of response they get. I hope to God I never have to "put it in their belly and pull the trigger", with my LCP, but I have had to use it for feral cats and groundhogs when I had absolutely nothing other than a rock to throw, and I would have greatly appreciated a good sight on my Ruger.

Try "putting it in their belly and pulling the trigger" for one of those critters!

Yeah, I could carry a bigger/better gun. Been there and done that. Too freaking old to carry a hogleg around all day anymore.

Let's see if anyone can really come up with some ideals to help Farmer17. I know I would like to have a choice for my LCP, but until Ruger sees fit to put something actually usable on them, we're stuck with other ideals.

Thanks for letting me rant!

Do you consider whats on a S&W J frame actual sights?

I have a LCP and can shoot it much more accurately at 5- 10 yards then a J frame. Do you actually think in a defensive situation you are going to have time to accurately line up your sights on the bad guy?. It's a pocket pistol and larger sights only serve to snag. Sighting down the slide works very well. If you want large sights carry a holster gun.

Here is a quote from Larry Seecamp from his homepage and I know he will not mind me printing it here. The Seecamp kept the 32ACP alive and is one of the finest, best made in USA pocket pistols around.. I admit the 380 is brutal to shoot and prefer the 32 Auto

"Prior to the introduction of the LWS .25, firearms manuals did not address the issue of self-defense. It was pretended in the manufacturers' instruction manuals, no doubt on the advice of high priced lawyers, that every pistol was a target pistol. Extensive sections of our first manual were reprinted in gun magazines because a manufacturer officially acknowledging self-protection as a legitimate reason for owning a firearm was a completely novel concept at the time. It was almost as shocking as bringing out a pistol without sights."
