Steve Landesberg who played Detective Arthur Dietrich died yesterday he was 65. I watched Barney Miller almost every thursday when I was a kid loved the show.

Thought it was the funniest show ever.

That was a great show, the "werewolf" episode was one of my favorites. Also when the A/C was out and everyone is drenched, Ron Glass turns around and says I wont allow myself to sweat.
Classic TV

The comedic chemistry between Landesberg and Glass was perfect. Those two played so well off of each other, that Barney Miller was a must see in our house. I see reruns now and then, but not as often as I'd like.

Only cop show I ever watched. It captured the nuttiness of the job perfectly.

"Dietrich" did good. RIP.

I think my favorite episode with Dietrich I believe was called Voice Analyzer. Either Dietrich was actually born on planet in the Alfa Centari system or the lie detector test was inconclusive.

the episode with William Windom with the bomb vest was very funny. also the one with the "CIA" agent but I don't remember that actor.

I agree 100%. I always thought it was the most realistic cop show on TV. Over the years I worked with everyone of those guys. Wojaortis (sp) was always my favorite.

"Wojo" always got upset when people couldn't spell his name... he snapped, "It's spelled just the way it sounds!"

Yep. Just like "WKRP" was the most realistic portrayal of lthe old AM radio days ever presented. You had to have done it to appreciate it.... I worked with every one of those guys too.

I have always said that Barney Miller was the most realistic cop show that has ever been on TV...
RIP Steve.....

I was a Detective in the mid 1970's during my last 18 months or so in NJ. I couldn't agree more! We had the same whackos all the time...just like they did on "Barney Miller".

The character played by Abe Vigoda, Fish, was cited by Mas Ayoob as an examplar of someone benefiting from shoulder-holster carry vs. belt holster carry, as Fish seemingly spent more time in the lavatory than on camera...

Barney's tactful maturity kept the zoo in order.

Wojo: "he fell in the toilet, ha ha ha"

Barney: "you mean he slipped in the bathroom?"

Wojo: "uh...I don't know"

I liked Barney's holstered Colt Detective Special. Made him look much classier than todays cops with plastic hi-cap autos.
