Do You Use A "Possession" Database?
I have thought about a firearm database, I have not looked for one yet.
Do you have any recommendations?
What about other valuables? Do they work on the same database?
I am a super-novice, but, have a daughter that create anything I want.
I just need to give her some guidance.
HELP!! Thanks.
NOTE: I am not against buying one, but, some recommendation would help too.

I assume you mean some way to keep track of your firearms and information about them, as well as values and expenditures?
I keep an excel spreadsheet, simple and effective and you can customize it anyway you want. If you don't have Microsoft Office and aren't willing to pay their price for it, look into OpenOffice.org which is a free alternative to the programs.
My dad just keeps a notebook.

I simply made my own tables in MS Word. Easy as pie.

I just use a spreadsheet. It serves my purposes well enough.

I have a spreadsheet I have been using for about 25 years. If you use a spreadsheet, you can sort by whatever criteria you like. If you use a word document (or other), you cannot sort.

I design database software but I use spreadsheets to keep lists of my guns, ammo and reloading components.
The authors of OpenOffice left after Sun took over and created a newer set of office software. Check out LibreOffice 4.1 is here! like open office it is also open source and free.

Here's a link to a commercial firearm database. They have a free trial version. I tried it and it was "OK" but I ended up just making an Excel spreadsheet. That did everything I wanted. https://mygundb.com/

I think of spread sheets and databases (does anybody really use db3/4 any more?) as tools that draw correlations between data. You don't need to compare your model 10 to your Rem 700 or draw a graph showing the correlation between your 1911 and your MkIV.
A simple list, in txt file format, seems like enough to store any and all information. Add a new gun/bowling ball/banana straightener, just add it to the list. Not much need for pre-defined "fields".
"S&W model 19, blue steel, 4" bbl, ser # 123456789, rubber pach grips, owner applied number 'SGTLUMPY' engraved on left side of hammer" ... etc
Sell a gun, just make an entry "Sold to Joe Blow [add identifiers for Mr Blow], June 1, 2013 for $525"

I created a Microsoft Access database for my guns years back, with queries and reports and an entry screen and fancy colors and graphics and everything.
Finally got tired of messing with it and went back to using a simple Excel spreadsheet.

I use gunsafe. The author is rebuilding his website, so it might not be available to download. It's simple and allows pics and all data related to any firearm.

I also use a spreadsheet that I have backed up in several places. I also save copies of all my receipts too.
My log includes:
The model
The caliber
The date it was purchased
Where it was purchased
The serial number
The price

Excel spread sheet, with tabs for current and previously owned. Just cut and paste when I sell one. I also keep a S&W Inventory with additional information on it such as when acquired, price paid, current value (update annually) If have box, finish, barrel length, grips, frame size, Mod # or name, and condition description with any other pieces of odd info.

I found a generic one on the 'net a few months back. It's a Word Doc, so it's familiar to me. I sorta 'customized' it to suit my needs.
Good thing for anyone to have when there collection get's above a 'few'.
I keep serial numbers, dates of purchase, sellers info, price, etc. I will be adding pictures in the future to each page.

I use Photobucket, and file three photos of each firearm with make, model, serial number, date of purchase, purchase price, FFL or seller in the caption. I do the same with a few family heirlooms.
